Hereditary fructose intolerance is a rare genetic disorder in which the body is unable to process the sugar fructose. Even small portions of fruits, vegetables, or sweets can cause serious health problems. This was reported on November 5 in the journal Medical Xpress.

As noted in the article, sugar is found not only in fruits, but also in honey, some vegetables, sugary drinks, prepared foods and desserts, and is also added to processed meat and dairy products. People with this disease should not consume fructose, sucrose and sorbitol, as the enzyme aldolase B, necessary for the breakdown of sugar, is missing.

When fructose accumulates in the liver, kidneys, and intestines, serious complications can develop: seizures, coma, liver and kidney failure. Symptoms in children include vomiting, drowsiness, irritability, refusal to eat, and slow growth. In adults, the disease can remain undiagnosed for years, manifested by chronic abdominal pain, fatigue, and low blood sugar levels.

Hereditary fructose intolerance is different from food allergies, which trigger an immune system reaction, and from food sensitivities such as lactose intolerance. This genetic disease is not related to immunity, and differs from fructose malabsorption, a milder disorder of sugar absorption in the intestine.

The diagnosis can be confirmed using a genetic test or a specialized glucose test. There is no treatment that completely eliminates the disease, but it can be controlled by strictly excluding fructose, sucrose and sorbitol from the diet. It is important to carefully read the ingredients of the products, as hidden sugar is found even in sauces, toothpaste and medicines.

Simple cereals, unsweetened vegetables, natural yogurt, unsweetened meat, fish, eggs, legumes and tofu are safe. Sugary fruits, juices, canned fruits, sweet vegetables, bread with added sugar, desserts, and processed meats should be avoided.

Early detection of a disease can save your health. Parents should pay attention to the child's sudden unwillingness to eat sweets, frequent vomiting and slow growth. In addition, it is important to consider hereditary fructose intolerance in cases of unexplained digestive problems, low blood sugar, or liver changes in order to make an accurate diagnosis and support the patient.

Earlier, on October 27, nutritionist Mila Maslennikova spoke about such consequences as increased stress levels, decreased immunity and skin deterioration, while following a low-calorie diet. When losing weight, the specialist recommended reducing the amount of calories received by 4-20% of the consumption rate.
