On August 19, 2026, Orthodox Christians will celebrate one of the most beloved and vibrant holidays of summer — the Transfiguration of the Lord, or the Apple Savior. This day, which has deep spiritual roots and folk traditions, marks an important evangelical event. All the details are in the Izvestia article.

Yablochny Spas – 2026: the exact date of the celebration

The Apple Savior, which in the church calendar is called the Transfiguration of the Lord, has a fixed date of celebration. In 2026, as always, it falls on August 19th. This holiday was established in honor of the event when Jesus Christ was transfigured in front of his disciples on Mount Tabor, revealing his Divine nature to them. It is this gospel story that underlies the worship services of the day.

In the folk tradition, the holiday was called "Apple Savior", since by that time the apples of the new harvest were just ripening in the middle zone of Russia. Prior to this date, believers, according to the strict monastic rule, were not supposed to eat apples and some other fruits. The consecration of fruits in the temple symbolized gratitude to God for the harvest.

Traditions and rituals on Yablochny Spas

The traditions of celebrating the Apple Savior are closely intertwined with church canons and folk customs. The central event of the day is the festive Divine Liturgy in Orthodox churches. Believers attend a divine service dedicated to the Transfiguration of the Lord.

After the service, the rite of consecration of the fruits of the new harvest takes place. Parishioners bring baskets of apples, pears, plums and other fruits to the church. This custom symbolizes the spiritualization of nature and the bringing of the firstfruits of the harvest as a gift to God. It is customary to share the consecrated fruits with loved ones and those in need.

In addition to visiting the temple, there were a number of folk customs on Yablochny Savior. It was believed that from this day on, nature unfolds from summer to autumn. People watched the sunset in the field, accompanied by songs. In the evening, it was customary to gather at a large family table, the main treat on which were apples.

What not to do on Apple Pie: the main prohibitions

There were certain prohibitions that they tried to observe. On this day, it was not customary to do heavy physical work around the house and in the garden. Sewing, cleaning, and construction work were postponed. It was forbidden to quarrel, swear, and wish harm to others, as it was believed that all bad thoughts and words could return to the holiday.

Special attention was paid to helping others. It was considered a good thing on this day to treat orphans, the sick and the poor with consecrated apples. This tradition fostered people's compassion and willingness to share the gifts they received from the earth and God.

The festive table at Yablochny Spas: the best recipes

As for the gastronomic aspect of the holiday, consecrated apples became the main ingredient for numerous dishes. The housewives tried to diversify the festive menu as much as possible, using fresh and baked fruits. The traditional treats for Apple Rescue were:

  • Pastries: pies and charlottes with apple filling, pancakes with apples, open and closed pies.

  • Desserts: baked apples with honey and nuts, apple jam, which was just starting to cook, marshmallows and mousses.

  • Drinks: freshly squeezed apple juice, compotes and fruit drinks, as well as dried fruit drinks.

Folk signs and beliefs about Yablochny Savior

Apples consecrated in the church were endowed with a special power in the popular consciousness. Various signs and beliefs were associated with them. For example, it was believed that if you make a wish by biting off the first consecrated fruit, it will definitely come true. Weather signs for Yablochny Spas were also important for farmers: a dry day foreshadowed the same autumn, and rain — rainy and cold.

Thus, the Apple Savior in 2026, as always, will combine deep spiritual content and the joy of a bountiful harvest. It will remind believers of the gospel values and allow them to touch the centuries-old traditions that are passed down from generation to generation. This is a day when spiritual transformation is symbolically associated with the transformation of nature and the abundance of its gifts.
