The feast of the Holy Great Martyr Catherine is celebrated annually on December 7. This day is dedicated to the memory of one of the most revered saints, a symbol of wisdom, courage and purity of faith. For more information, see the Izvestia article.

About the holiday

Saint Catherine was born in the year 287 A.D. in the city of Alexandria. She was distinguished by extraordinary knowledge and beauty, as well as deep faith. After Emperor Maximin began the persecution of Christians, Catherine openly confessed Christ and converted many scientists and soldiers to the faith. For this, she was tortured and executed.

Immediately after her death, miracles began to happen, and the relics of the saint were transferred to Sinai, where the famous monastery of St. Catherine was later founded.

The meaning of the holiday

The Day of Remembrance of the Great Martyr Catherine reminds believers of steadfastness in faith and spiritual wisdom. In the Orthodox tradition, the saint is considered the patroness of students, teachers, philosophers and brides. They turn to her with prayers for help in learning, for wise decisions and for the gift of a happy family.

On this day, Orthodox people attend divine services, pray to St. Catherine, read her life and ask for strengthening of the spirit in order to follow the path of truth and faith. The holiday helps to remember the importance of inner purity, humility and fortitude, for which the Great Martyr became famous.
