Dmitrievsky Parental Saturday occupies a special place in the calendar of Orthodox memorial days, marking the autumn commemoration of deceased ancestors. This Saturday, which falls on November 1 in 2025, is a day of prayerful remembrance for those who are not with us, but whose images remain forever in the hearts of the living. Izvestia has prepared postcards and greetings especially for this date.

History and traditions of Memorial Day

Dmitrievskaya Parental Saturday is one of the main days of commemoration of the deceased in the Orthodox tradition, historically associated with the memory of soldiers who fell on the battlefield. The establishment of this memorial Saturday is usually attributed to the victory in the Battle of Kulikovo in 1380. According to legend, Prince Dmitry Donskoy, having defeated Mamai's army, visited the Trinity-Sergius Monastery, where he commemorated the fallen soldiers. St. Sergius of Radonezh celebrated a memorial service for them, and since then this tradition has been ingrained in the church charter. Over time, Dmitrievskaya Saturday became a day of commemoration not only for soldiers, but also for all deceased Orthodox Christians, becoming a kind of milestone in autumn, when the living turn to the memory of their ancestors in a special way.

The church charter prescribes a special commemoration of the dead on this day. On Friday, on the eve of parental Saturday, a Great Memorial Service, or Parastas, is served in churches, and on the memorial day itself, a requiem Divine Liturgy and a general memorial service. Believers attend worship services, where they submit notes with the names of deceased relatives for their commemoration during prayer. It is an important tradition to bring donations to the church — usually bread, red wine (cahors), vegetable oil, sugar and other products that are consecrated and later distributed to those in need or go to the needs of the parish.

The folk customs of the Dmitrievsky Sabbath are closely intertwined with those of the church. After visiting the temple and cemetery, where it is customary to tidy up the graves and pray, families gather for memorial meals. Traditional dishes for such a meal are served on the table: kutya (sweet porridge made from wheat or rice with raisins and honey), pancakes, jelly, as well as favorite dishes of deceased relatives. At the memorial table, the departed are remembered with kind words, family stories are shared, which helps to preserve a living bond between generations. In some regions, it was customary to leave a clean plate with a set and treats on the table for deceased relatives at night, symbolically inviting them to the table. These traditions, which have their roots in ancient times, emphasize a special attitude towards the ancestors and the belief in the inseparable spiritual connection between the living and the dead.
