Three Chinese citizens were detained in Tbilisi who were trying to purchase uranium in order to transport it through Russia to China. This was announced at a briefing on October 25 by the first deputy head of the department, Lasha Magradze.
"Three Chinese citizens were detained in an attempt to illegally acquire nuclear materials...> Chinese citizens planned to pay $400,000 for the goods," the Novosti — Georgia newspaper reported on its Telegram channel.
It is specified that a Chinese citizen who was illegally in Georgia brought with him two compatriots who began searching for uranium throughout the country. The investigation suggests that their actions were coordinated by other people in China. The arrest occurred when the attackers were preparing for a deal to purchase uranium. During the searches conducted in Tbilisi and Batumi, evidence was seized.
A criminal case has been opened against the detainees under the article "Illegal handling of nuclear materials or devices, radioactive waste, and radioactive substances," and they face up to 10 years in prison.
