Alexander Okovity, coach of the Russian national athletics team, has died in St. Petersburg.

Famous athletics coach Alexander Okovity died in St. Petersburg at the age of 88. This was announced on October 20 in the Telegram channel of the Committee on Physical Culture and Sports of the city.

"Honored Athletics Coach of the RSFSR, Honored Worker of Physical Culture of the Russian Federation Alexander Kirillovich Okovitoy has died today. He was 87 years old," the publication says.

The St. Petersburg Committee on Physical Culture and Sports expressed its deep condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Okovitoy, noting his significant contribution to the development of athletics.

For almost 30 years, Okovity has been a senior coach at Dynamo Sports Training Center. From 1980 to 2000, he coached the Leningrad and St. Petersburg national teams, and from 1990 to 1997, the Russian national team.

Okovity became a mentor to outstanding athletes, including two-time Olympic silver medalist Igor Trandenkov, Olympic silver medalist Rodion Gataullin, Russian champion Ruslan Gataullin and Russian champion Alexandra Kiryashova.
