Rospatent explained SHAMAN's refusal to register a trademark
The expression "I am Russian" is generally used, therefore, it cannot be registered as a trademark. This was announced on October 19 by the Head of Rospatent, Yuri Zubov.
This is how he commented on the refusal of the Honored Artist of Russia SHAMAN (real name Yaroslav Dronov) to register the trademark "I am Russian".
"The reason (for the refusal. — Ed.) — non-compliance with the requirements of state registration," Zubov said in an interview with RIA Novosti.
He noted that a trademark should have distinctive properties that allow consumers to uniquely identify the products or services of a particular copyright holder.
Zubov added that if the expression is commonly used, it cannot be registered as a trademark.
On October 16, 2024, it became known that the singer was registering the trademark "I am Russian". Under this name, the performer can produce alcoholic beverages and cosmetics.
On October 9, 2025, it was reported that Rospatent refused SHAMAN registration of the trademark "I am Russian". Both of the contractor's applications, which were submitted back in 2024, were rejected. According to lawyer Sergey Zuikov, the trademark "I am Russian" has no distinguishing ability and does not characterize the declared goods, therefore it cannot be registered.
In turn, MP Vitaly Milonov expressed disagreement about the privatization and monetization of the concept of "I am Russian." He pointed out that the artist can freely dispose only of his stage image.
