- The Ministry of Industry and Trade proposed to introduce mandatory labeling of meat and sausage products
The Ministry of Industry and Trade of Russia proposed to introduce mandatory labeling of meat and sausage products from August 1 and October 1, 2026, respectively. This was announced on October 7 on the official website of the department.
"The draft resolution provides for the phased introduction of mandatory labeling by means of identification in relation to meat products, including meat offal and meat fat products packaged in consumer packaging," the report says.
It is specified that from March 1, 2026, registration of participants in product turnover in the labeling system will be introduced, and from August 1, 2026, meat products will be subject to mandatory labeling. Full labeling of sausage products will begin on October 1, 2026.
According to the agency, the introduction of labeling will help reduce the volume of illegal trafficking in meat products, improve quality control, and provide consumers with complete information about the origin of the products. In case of violations, citizens will be able to file complaints through the labeling system.
In addition, the Ministry of Industry and Trade plans to conduct a voluntary experiment in which participants will be able to test labeling methods for free using equipment and codes provided by the system operator.
Earlier, on October 2, the government of the Russian Federation proposed to introduce a state duty for entering information about goods subject to mandatory labeling into the state information system for monitoring their turnover. At the same time, the bill does not specify which goods will be subject to this duty. The amount of the fee will be determined by the Government.
