- Prayer to St. Nicholas the Wonderworker: how to ask for help in the most difficult life situations
St. Nicholas the Wonderworker is one of the most revered saints of the Christian world, whose image has inspired believers to pray and hope for centuries. His veneration spread far beyond the borders of Byzantium, encompassing Europe and Russia, where the image of the saint took root not only in church but also in popular culture. The most powerful prayers to the saint are in the material of Izvestia.
Who is Nicholas the Wonderworker?
St. Nicholas of Myra, revered by Orthodox Christians as St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, is considered one of the most revered saints in the world. His life dates back to the III–IV centuries, and his memory is celebrated on December 19 (December 6, Old style) and May 22 (May 9, old style).
The future saint was born in the city of Patara in Asia Minor into a wealthy but deeply religious family. From a young age, he was distinguished by his charity, helped those in need, and aspired to spirituality. According to legend, Nicholas was elected bishop of Myra of Lycia, where he served for many years.
The main features of his personality, thanks to which he became revered by the people, were compassion and a willingness to protect the innocent. Numerous testimonies of his intercession have been preserved: helping poor girls to whom the saint secretly left a dowry, protecting the unjustly convicted, saving sailors during a storm. That is why St. Nicholas the Wonderworker is considered the patron saint of travelers and seafarers, the protector of children and the underprivileged.
Subsequently, his veneration spread far beyond the borders of the Byzantine Empire: the cult of the saint became stronger in Europe, and then in Russia. In the folk tradition, the image of St. Nicholas acquired a special meaning — he was perceived as a "speedy helper" in a variety of everyday situations. In Russian folklore and proverbs, his name is more common than other saints.
Today, St. Nicholas occupies a special place in the Orthodox spiritual culture. Hundreds of temples bear his name, and in prayer practice he is one of the closest intercessors to the believer.
The meaning of prayer to St. Nicholas
Prayer to Nicholas the Wonderworker is traditionally considered as an appeal to the saint with a request for intercession before God. In Orthodoxy, saints are not perceived as independent "miracle workers", but as intercessors who can strengthen the prayer of those who go to Christ.
The special role of Nicholas in spiritual life is connected with his universality. If other saints have more specific areas of veneration (for example, Panteleimon is a healer, George the Victorious is a defender of the warrior), then Nicholas the Wonderworker is perceived as a saint to whom one can turn in almost any need.
In liturgical texts, he is referred to as a "speedy helper," a "comforter in trouble," and a "protector of the offended." For many Orthodox Christians, his prayer becomes the first thing they resort to in a difficult moment, whether it's the illness of loved ones, financial difficulties, or family quarrels.
In addition to petitions, prayer to Nicholas is often accompanied by gratitude. Believers note that after turning to the saint, inner relief comes, confidence and hope appear. In this sense, prayer plays not only a sacred, but also a psychological role, helping a person overcome despair and find spiritual balance.
When and how to recite prayer
In the Orthodox tradition, there is no strict canon that would determine the time of prayer to St. Nicholas. You can contact him at any time of the day and in any place. Nevertheless, the church rules and the experience of confessors highlight several practical recommendations.
Firstly, the saint's memorial days, December 19 and May 22, are of particular importance. On these dates, many churches serve festive liturgies and prayer services to St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, and believers try to say a prayer on this day.
Secondly, in popular practice, there is an idea that prayers to Nicholas are especially effective on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Thursday is generally considered "St. Nicholas Day," and in the old days it was often dedicated to reading the akathist or a special prayer address.
Traditionally, the prayer is read in front of the icon of the saint. The believer makes the sign of the cross over himself, addresses God, and then recites the text of the prayer. It is important to observe silence and inner attention: the meaning of conversion lies not in the mechanical pronunciation of words, but in personal faith and sincerity.
Confessors also advise combining prayer to Nicholas with participation in the sacraments of the church — with confession and communion. Then turning to a saint becomes not just a request for help, but a part of a full-fledged spiritual life.
The most powerful prayer to St. Nicholas the Wonderworker
The power of any prayer is determined by the sincerity of the faith with which it is uttered. However, there are texts in church and folk practice that are considered particularly significant.
These include a prayer beginning with the words "O All-merciful Father Nicholas," in which the saint is referred to as "the speedy helper and intercessor." In it, believers ask the saint for protection from troubles and diseases, for salvation on the way, for support in family and everyday difficulties. This text is often referred to as a universal appeal to the saint, as it covers all the basic requests that people come to Nicholas with.
In addition, among the popular forms of addresses are troparia and kontakions to the saint, which are part of the liturgical services, as well as the akathist to Nicholas the Wonderworker, read at home or in church. The akathist, consisting of 13 kontakions and 12 icons, is one of the most famous and widespread forms of prayer addressing the saint.
In daily practice, believers often resort to a short prayer in their own words, addressing Nicholas as if they were talking to a living intercessor. The Church emphasizes that God hears every sincere word, and the saint only helps to convey the request.
Prayers to St. Nicholas the Wonderworker:
"O All-holy Nicholas, most glorious servant of the Lord, our ardent intercessor, and our speedy helper everywhere in tribulation! Help me, a sinner and despondent: in my present life, beseech the Lord God to grant me the remission of all my sins, how many I have sinned from my youth throughout my life in deed, word, thought, and all my feelings; and at the end of my soul, help me, an unhappy man, beseech the Lord God, the Creator of all creation, to deliver I am saved from the torments of the air and eternal torment, so that I may constantly glorify the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit, and your merciful intercession, now and always and forever and ever. Amen to that.";
"O All-merciful Father Nicholas, pastor and teacher of all who in faith seek your intercession and call upon you in fervent prayer! Hasten quickly and deliver the flock of Christ from the wolves that destroy it, and protect every Christian country and preserve it with your holy prayers from worldly rebellion, earthquake, invasion of foreigners and civil war, from famine, flood, fire, sword and sudden death. And just as you had mercy on the three men who were in prison, and delivered them from the royal wrath and from being beheaded by the sword, so have mercy on me, who am in the darkness of my sins in mind, word, and deed, and deliver me from the wrath of God and eternal punishment, so that through your intercession and help, through your mercy and grace, Christ God He will grant me to live a quiet and sinless life in this world and will save me from the fate of those standing on the left, and will deign to stand on the right with all the saints. Amen to that.";
"In the Worlds, Saint, you appeared as a performer of sacred ministry, for having fulfilled the Gospel of Christ, Venerable One, you laid down your soul for your people and saved the innocent from death, and therefore you were sanctified as a great servant of the Mysteries of God's grace."
