Szijjarto called on the EU to declare the Antifa movement a terrorist organization
Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto has proposed that the European Union (EU) recognize the Antifa movement as a terrorist organization, following the example of the United States. This was reported by the MTI news agency on September 20.
"Peter Szijjarto proposed classifying the Antifa movement as a terrorist organization in a letter sent on Saturday to the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaya Kallas," the publication says.
Szijjarto recalled that in recent years, a group associated with Antifa has carried out a number of terrorist attacks in EU countries, including in Germany, France and Italy. It was especially alarming for Hungary that members of this movement attacked the country's citizens, and some of them received asylum in EU countries, including parliamentarians, writes MTI.
"These acts clearly show that Antifa poses a serious threat to the safety of EU citizens," the agency quoted Szijjarto as saying.
He noted that such actions should lead to the strengthening of joint measures to combat terrorism in the EU. The Hungarian minister stressed that the United States has also classified Antifa as a terrorist organization, and Hungary considers it important to synchronize steps with the United States in the global fight against terrorism.
"I respectfully suggest that the European Union follow this example [of the United States] and include Antifa in the list of terrorist organizations and introduce the necessary restrictive measures against groups and individuals associated with them," concluded the Hungarian Foreign Minister.
On September 18, US President Donald Trump announced that he recognizes the Antifa movement as a terrorist organization. He also threatened investigations against those who finance the movement.
