Scientists talked about decoding animal speech using AI
Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly helping scientists decipher complex forms of communication among animals. In a recent AI study, the sounds made by sperm whales were analyzed, allowing scientists to identify patterns similar to those found in human language. These studies open up new perspectives in understanding how animals can use sound to communicate. This was reported in the journal Nature.
In particular, scientists have used AI to analyze the code that sperm whales use to communicate. Codes are sound units that can vary in tempo and rhythm, and, as it turned out, these changes can be similar to vowels and diphthongs in human language. Studies have shown that such changes in frequencies can mean different emotions and intentions conveyed by whales.
Gasper Begus, a linguist from Project CETI, noted that the analogy with human vowels and diphthongs opens up the possibility for further understanding how animals can "speak" and what meanings they can convey. Researchers are already working on creating systems that will allow AI not only to perceive and analyze animal sounds, but also to generate responses to these sounds in order to create a dialogue.
Despite the promise of such technologies, scientists are raising ethical issues in using AI to communicate with animals. It is expected that if it is possible to successfully establish interaction with animals through AI, this will allow not only a deeper understanding of their behavior, but also better care for them within the framework of nature conservation and conservation of biological diversity.
On July 1, Bloomberg reported that Mark Zuckerberg, one of the founders of Meta Corporation (recognized as extremist and banned in Russia), announced the creation of Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL), which will develop artificial "superintelligence." It is specified that Alexander Wang, the former CEO of the Scale AI startup, will become the head of the new division.
