The Russian Federation approved tougher penalties for ex-prisoners who violated the contract with the Ministry of Defense

On September 15, the Government Commission on Legislative Activity approved an initiative to introduce stricter liability measures for former prisoners who signed a contract with the Russian Defense Ministry and violated its terms.

"The government Commission approved proposals to amend Articles 337 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation, 338 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation, 339 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation ("Unauthorized abandonment of a unit, desertion, evasion of military service duties by feigning illness or by other means" — Ed.)," TASS cites the materials of the meeting.

The changes relate to individuals who were released from punishment after signing a contract with the Ministry of Defense. In particular, for the unauthorized abandonment of a military unit, such servicemen are proposed to be sentenced to imprisonment for a period of seven to 12 years. At the moment, the maximum sentence for this crime for all military personnel is five years in prison.

On August 7, a court in Sevastopol sentenced a 52-year-old local resident to 14 years in prison for treason. According to the investigation, in the period from December 2023 to April 2024, the man was recruited through a messenger by an employee of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU). On the instructions of the curators, the defendant took a mobile phone with the necessary software for transmitting photos and other information about the location of weapons and military facilities of the Russian army from the cache prepared for him.
