The large-scale and uncontrolled application of sanctions by the West violates the principles of the United Nations and hinders the sovereign development of countries. This was announced on September 12 by Evgeny Ustinov, Senior Adviser to the Permanent Mission of Russia to the United Nations (UN).

"The large—scale uncontrolled use of unilateral coercive measures by Western states <...> is turning into a global challenge to the sovereign development of states and the prosperity of their citizens," he said at the 60th session of the UN Human Rights Council, RIA Novosti quoted the diplomat as saying.

Ustinov added that such sanctions have become a global problem, as the West uses them to achieve its own political goals and gain economic benefits. He also expressed concern about the growing use of secondary sanctions, including the threat of criminal liability for circumventing restrictions in third countries.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on September 9 that Western countries regularly violate the principles of the UN Charter, but this does not mean that Russia should abandon international law. He also noted that Russia's strength lies in the fact that the international legal system stands on the side of the Russian Federation.
