Russian diplomat Sergei Yakovlev has died.

The retired Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Sergey Yakovlev died at the age of 78. This was announced on September 10 by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation.

"It is with deep regret that we inform you that Sergey Yakovlevich Yakovlev, the retired Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, died on September 5, 2025," the Russian Foreign Ministry said in an official statement on its website.

Sergey Yakovlev was born on January 24, 1948 in Moscow. In 1971, he graduated from MGIMO University of the USSR Ministry of Foreign Affairs, after which he devoted his career to diplomacy. He worked for more than 40 years in the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of the USSR and Russia and held important positions in diplomatic missions in Sudan, Egypt, and Syria. From 2006 to 2011, he served as the Special Representative of the Russian Foreign Minister for the Middle East settlement.

In 2007, Yakovlev was awarded the diplomatic rank of Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary. For his services, he was awarded state awards, including the Order of Friendship and the title "Honored Worker of the Diplomatic Service of the Russian Federation.
