The headquarters of the NATO Northern Land Component Command (MCLCC) has started operating in the Finnish city of Mikkeli. This was announced on September 1 by the army press service.

"The new command of the Northern Land Component of NATO began operations in Mikkeli together with the headquarters of the Finnish army on September 1, 2025," the publication says on the website.

It is specified that at the initial stage of the operation, the number of staff at the headquarters will be about 10 people. At the same time, the number of staff will be increased to about 50 employees in the coming years. The leadership team will include representatives of NATO member countries, including Finland.

In addition, the Northern Land Command manages the NATO ground forces and coordinates the actions of the national ground forces in the northern region, including planning, preparing and conducting joint exercises of the alliance. The headquarters will also participate in meetings and work of both the headquarters of the ground forces and the North Atlantic Alliance itself.

Earlier, on August 26, the Politico newspaper reported that the Polish and Finnish authorities were considering the possibility of restoring marshes on the borders with the Russian Federation in order to protect against the alleged Russian threat. It was noted that the swampy area is difficult for military equipment, so the authorities of European countries plan to water previously drained peat bogs.
