This year, parents spent an average of 15,000 rubles on a minimally equipped student's corner, experts from the OFD Platform estimated. This amount includes the purchase of a table, a shelf for textbooks and notebooks, a computer chair and a lamp. The price of this kit has increased by 7% over the year, and it has also become more common to buy it than in August 2024. Sales of children's computer chairs on some Internet sites increased by 65%, computer tables — by 12%. When choosing furniture for a school corner, it is necessary to pay attention to its safety and ergonomics, and to select it taking into account the age, height and weight of the child, doctors and experts of Rospotrebnadzor reminded.

How much does a school corner cost?

The cost of a minimally equipped school corner — a table, a shelving, a computer chair and a desk lamp — averaged 15 thousand rubles in August 2025, experts from the OFD Platform calculated at the request of Izvestia. This is about 7% more expensive than a year ago — in 2024, such a set cost parents about 14 thousand.

According to the OFD Platform, in August 2025, parents purchased shelving at prices 10% higher than a year ago — for an average of 1,088 rubles. The cost of a desk lamp increased by 7% to 2 thousand rubles, a computer chair — by 4%, reaching 7.1 thousand, and a student desk — by 3%, to 4.9 thousand rubles.

In 2025, parents are more willing to spend money on more expensive school supplies, including furniture, experts from the OFD Platform noted. This trend was confirmed to Izvestia by representatives of marketplaces.

According to Avito Delivery, in August 2025, sales of children's computer chairs increased by 65% compared to the same period in 2024, and desks — by 12%. Wildberries reported that sales of computer desks increased by 10%, chairs — by 16%.

And according to the OFD Platform, the number of purchases of computer chairs increased by 6% year—on—year, shelving by 5%, and student desks by 3%. Table lamps began to be bought 2% less frequently.

Avito Delivery noted that buying furniture "by hand" remains a relevant way to save money during the school expenses season.

"Many parents prefer retail not only because of the more affordable prices, but also because the goods are often in excellent condition, especially when it comes to furniture that has been used carefully and for a short time," the experts explained.

For example, a new hand-held child computer chair will cost an average of 2.9 thousand rubles instead of 7 thousand, meaning savings of more than 50%.

How to properly equip a corner for a student

School furniture should be ergonomic, functional, safe, stable and reliable, Rospotrebnadzor emphasized.

"It is not allowed to have protruding parts, sharp corners, glass inserts and metal fittings on it," the department clarified.

When choosing furniture, the child's age, weight and height should be taken into account first of all. This will help preserve his health, the Rospotrebnadzor added.

There is now a large selection of height-adjustable tables and chairs on the market, noted orthopedist Alexey Viktorov.

— And it makes sense to purchase just such furniture. Then you won't have to change it often as the child grows," he said.

The doctor stressed that it is important to organize the student's workplace so that he sits correctly while doing homework or studying with a tutor.

— The foot should be completely on the floor at an angle of 90 degrees to the shin. The knees should also be bent at a 90-degree angle. The child's elbows, if they are lying on the table, should be at a right angle," he said.

The correct height selection of the table can be checked by controlling the position of the index finger on it.

— If the height of the table is chosen correctly, then when the elbow is bent, the index finger will be opposite the temple, — the doctor noted.

And Ekaterina Demyanovskaya, a doctor at the Hemotest laboratory, added that with the right choice of table and chair, both of the child's feet should be on the floor.

— If the child does not reach the floor with his feet, you can put a special stand or a low stool on the floor under his feet, — she said.

The expert clarified that for first—graders up to 120 cm tall, a table with a height of at least 52 cm is suitable, and a chair with a seat at least 32 cm from the floor.

According to her, while working at the table, a palm should pass freely between the baby's breast and the tabletop.

The student's desk is best placed near the window — there will be more natural light during the day, Ekaterina Demyanovskaya added.

— But you need to consider which hand the child writes with. For a right—handed person, it is better to place the table to the left of the window, for a left—handed person - to the right," the expert emphasized.

A table lamp is placed in the same way, she added. The light from the bulb should be warm or neutral white and should not hit the eyes, but gently diffuse over the table.

— But one table lamp is not enough, at dusk and at night, if the child is working at the table, it is necessary to turn on the central lighting as well, — Ekaterina Demyanovskaya reminded.

The back of the chair should be positioned at an angle from 90 to 110 degrees, Alexey Viktorov added. It is also important that the support for the back is in the lumbar region.

— For children of primary school age, it is advisable to choose a work chair without wheels and rotations. An armchair with such options can make it difficult to concentrate and sit straight — the child will fidget and get distracted," Ekaterina Demyanovskaya noted.

The doctors also reminded that the computer monitor should be positioned exactly opposite the eyes, but so that the work surface is sufficient for writing.

A properly selected table and chair will help students avoid developing, for example, scoliosis (a condition where the spine bends or twists, and posture is impaired) or kyphosis (an abnormal position of the spine with a bend to the back), the doctors noted.
