Tenerife-Cabberty cyclist Ivan Melendez Luque died at the age of 17 after being injured in a massive blockage on the second stage of the Vuelta Ribera del Duero multi-day race in the province of Soria in northern Spain. This was reported on August 23 by the Eurosport TV channel.

It is noted that the competition stage was first suspended on August 23 due to a shortage of ambulances, and after confirming the death of the athlete, the race was canceled. Over 150 people participated in it.

Two days of mourning have been declared in connection with the tragedy in Aranda de Duero, the El Dia de Soria news portal notes.

The International Cycling Union (UCI) and the Royal Spanish Cycling Federation expressed their condolences over the death of the athlete.

"The International Cycling Union (UCI) deeply mourns the tragic death of Spanish rider Ivan Melendez Luque (Tenerife-Cabberty U19 team), who died from injuries sustained <...>...> as a result of a fall at a cycling race," they wrote on the official page of the union on the social network X (ex. Twitter).

Earlier, on July 17, in Italy, in the municipality of Pontey, 19-year-old cyclist Samuele Privitera died during the first stage of the Giro Della Valle d'Aosta cycling race due to a fall. It was noted that riders under the age of 23 take part in such competitions.
