Relations between Russia and Nicaragua are reaching the next level: Managua intends to expand cooperation with Moscow by establishing trade relations with new Russian regions. As the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the republic, Waldrak Gentske, told Izvestia, its representatives are ready to visit the DPR, LPR, Kherson and Zaporizhia regions. The country was the first in Latin America to officially recognize Russian sovereignty over these territories. Nicaragua could supply coffee and tropical fruits there, former Russian Ambassador to the republic Alexander Khokholikov believes. Managua is interested in strengthening cooperation with the DPR, LPR, Kherson and Zaporizhia regions, Nicaraguan Foreign Minister Waldrak Gentske told Izvestia.
— We have confirmed our readiness and made an offer to establish closer relations and commercial ties with these territories. Obviously, as subjects of the Russian Federation, they will be part of very fruitful bilateral relations, existing bilateral working agreements, and a memorandum of understanding in various areas of cooperation," the diplomat told Izvestia.

He stressed that representatives of Nicaragua are ready to visit new Russian regions. By the way, the country is already actively establishing contacts not only at the state level, but also at the municipal level. In January 2024, Yalta and Granada became twin cities, and in March of the same year it became known that a similar agreement was being prepared between Simferopol and Managua.
In the context of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, it is difficult to talk about any specific bilateral economic projects, nevertheless, the supply of Nicaraguan coffee and tropical fruits would be quite appropriate, said Alexander Khokholikov, ex-Ambassador of the Russian Federation to Nicaragua.
— In turn, new regions have always been famous for their metallurgy, shipbuilding, processing of agricultural products and production of grain crops. All these industries are of interest to the Nicaraguan side. Over time, work in these areas could become the basis for mutually beneficial cooperation," he told Izvestia.
The Zaporizhia region is ready to support any areas of cooperation with Nicaragua, said Dmitry Vorona, Deputy Chairman of the Federation Council Committee on Economic Policy, Senator from the region.
— Contacts, including at the level of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, occur constantly. Work is underway in all areas where reunified regions can be useful," he told Izvestia. — In the interests of business relations, we do not disclose specifics, so as not to attract attention in the face of sanctions pressure. Nevertheless, areas of interest may include agriculture, mechanical engineering, and metallurgy.
The DPR is also looking positively at the possibility of establishing trade relations with Nicaragua. The Republic is also ready to look for opportunities for cooperation on humanitarian and cultural issues, said Natalia Nikonorova, Senator from the republic.
— Our region has industrial and agricultural potential, is able to offer products of metallurgy, mechanical engineering and agriculture. I am convinced that we will find common ground to create and implement mutually beneficial projects," she told Izvestia.
Which countries can recognize the sovereignty of the Russian Federation over new regions
The Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics, as well as the Zaporizhia and Kherson regions, became part of Russia following referendums in 2022. The regions are enshrined in the Constitution as integral parts of the country.
On July 30, Nicaragua recognized these four entities as part of the Russian Federation. It became the first country in Latin America to make such a decision.

Russia is our strategic ally. The logic that guides our leaders is linear. This is a matter of respect, recognition and support for our ally," says the Foreign Minister of the Latin American state.
He also noted that Managua is ready to support the decision of the Russian Federation to include new regions in the country on the platforms of international organizations.
— We have repeatedly stated this, even on the platforms of those regional organizations in which we are members. We are following the line clearly set by our management. We have the opportunity, the ability and the willingness to defend our strategic ally, in this case the Russian Federation," Waldrak Gaske said.
Moscow welcomed Nicaragua's decision to recognize the new regions of Russia. Dmitry Medvedev, Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council, said that Russia appreciates this step. Alexander Voloshin, a senator from the DPR, expressed confidence that this was "only the beginning of a trend towards recognition of an obvious fact by the entire world community."
Although Latin America is cautiously commenting on the entry of new regions into Russia, Russia's closest allies in the region, in particular Venezuela and Cuba, could make a similar decision in the future.
In February 2022, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro expressed support to Vladimir Putin in connection with Moscow's recognition of the Lugansk and Donetsk People's Republics. The head of the Latin American state has also repeatedly approved of Russia's actions in connection with its conduct. So, on August 11, Maduro said that the Russian Federation and Vladimir Putin personally had achieved success not only in the economic sphere, but also in political, military and diplomatic areas. In addition, Moscow recently signed a strategic partnership and cooperation agreement with Caracas, which further strengthened relations between the two countries.
Cuba is another close ally of Russia in Latin America. In February 2022, the president of the island state, Miguel Diaz-Canel, recognized the independence of the DPR and the LPR. At the same time, he expressed solidarity with Moscow against the background of the imposition of sanctions and the approach of NATO to the borders of the Russian Federation. It is possible that Havana will become the next country to also recognize the four new regions as a legitimate part of Russia.
The rest of Latin America has taken a restrained stance towards Russia and the Ukrainian conflict. They continue economic, cultural and humanitarian cooperation with Moscow, but they do not dare to openly support Moscow, fearing sanctions from the United States and the European Union.
