On average, Russians rest for 4 hours and 7 minutes a day, but residents of the North Caucasian republics have the most free time, analysts estimate. Khakassia, the Orel region and Moscow are also among the leaders. And Chechnya is the leader in terms of sleep duration — on average, a resident of this region sleeps 10 hours and 5 minutes. They also like to sleep longer in the Smolensk region and Kamchatka. About where they rest and sleep the least, and whether Russians keep a balance between work and rest, is in the Izvestia article.

How much do Russians spend their holidays

Residents of Chechnya have the most free time in Russia, which is an average of 5 hours and 51 minutes daily, according to analysts at the FinExpertiza audit and consulting network, according to Rosstat (Izvestia has a study). The indicator of the republic is almost two hours more than in Russia as a whole: the average citizen of the Russian Federation rests for 4 hours and 7 minutes a day.

Ingushetia, North Ossetia, Dagestan and Karachay-Cherkessia were also among the leaders in terms of free time. Sleep rates range from 5 hours 36 minutes to 4 hours 48 minutes. There are slightly fewer tourists in Crimea, Khakassia, the Orel region and Moscow.

The analysis is based on data from a sample observation of the use of daily time by the population conducted by Rosstat. The survey involved members of 45,000 households aged 15 and over from all regions of Russia. The participants kept diaries and also answered additional questions about the allocation of their time.

Residents of Chuvashia have the least free time — 3 hours and 20 minutes. Yakutia, Khabarovsk and Kamchatka Territories, and Bashkiria are also among the anti-leaders.

From a psychological point of view, the differences in recreation culture between the regions of Russia reflect the complex interaction of socio-cultural, economic and climatic factors, says Lyudmila Ryazantseva, a teacher-psychologist at the Moscow Art and Industrial Institute.

— High rates of free time in the republics of the North Caucasus are associated not only with objective circumstances, but also with the peculiarities of the value system, — she said. — In traditional Caucasian cultures, family and social ties have historically taken precedence over work in the Western sense. It's about the philosophy of life, where time for communication, reflection and recovery is seen as a natural necessity, not a luxury.

In Moscow, the expert noted, the situation is explained by the polarization of labor regimes.

— Part of the population does work in a high-intensity mode, but a significant proportion of Muscovites have flexible schedules, remote work opportunities, or are employed in areas that allow them to manage time more efficiently. The developed infrastructure of the city reduces time for everyday tasks, freeing up resources for leisure," Lyudmila Ryazantseva believes.

Tatiana Pershina, associate professor of Statistics at the State University of Management, urged us not to forget that the peculiarities of the economic structure play an important role in the North Caucasus — there are fewer large industrial enterprises in the republics, the proportion of self-employment and family business is higher, which allows for more flexible time management.

"And it's funny that Muscovites, despite the traffic jams and stress of the metropolis, manage to be among the leaders in terms of the amount of free time, but here again, the advantages of remote work should be noted, since while some are in traffic jams, others are already at home watching TV shows or reading books before going to bed and consider it a quality vacation," she said.

How long do Russians sleep?

Chechnya also has the highest rates in the country in terms of quality of life, such as sleep duration, which is an average of 10 hours and five minutes. At the same time, the majority of Russians in different regions sleep longer than the standard eight hours — an average of 8 hours and 43 minutes per day per person.

In addition, they like to sleep for a long time and have such an opportunity in the Smolensk region (9 hours 17 min.), Moscow (9 hours 12 min.), Kabardino-Balkaria (9 hours 5 min.), Ingushetia (9 hours 4 min.), Kamchatka Krai (9 hours 3 min.), Yakutia (8 hours 58 minutes), the Tomsk region (8 hours 57 minutes), as well as the Krasnoyarsk Territory and Tuva (8 hours 56 minutes each).

Sleep the least in Adygea (8 hours 1 min.), Khakassia (8 hours 5 min.), Chuvashia (8 hours 8 min.), Volgograd region (8 hours 10 min.), Karachay-Cherkessia (8 hours 11 min.) and Komi (8 hours 13 min.). The Khabarovsk Territory, North Ossetia, Udmurtia and Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug are also among the ten regions where people sleep the least.

"However, this figure includes not only sleep itself, but also the time spent in bed before falling asleep and after waking up, as well as periods of insomnia," explained FinExpertiza. "It is worth noting that the overall figure increases due to the participation in the study of unemployed categories of the population, including pensioners, who have more opportunities for recreation.".

They also added that Russian women sleep on average nine minutes longer than men: 8 hours 47 minutes versus 8 hours 38 minutes. Over the past five years, the time spent sleeping by both sexes has increased slightly, by an average of eight minutes.

Tatiana Pershina noted that Russians have a very relative concept of work-leisure balance.

"We either sleep a lot or restlessly, and we often rest passively," she said.

Social psychologist Alexey Roshchin believes that many Russian citizens simply do not have such a balance.

"After the main job, people go to work part—time," he reminded.

He also called lack of sleep one of the main problems of the country's residents.: modern people have too many things to do and simply don't have time to sleep.
