On International Women's Day, a glass of Russian sparkling wine will create a festive atmosphere: the share of these domestic drinks on the shelf is 70%. Importers and sellers of these alcoholic products told Izvestia about this. The minimum purchase receipt for sparkling wine for the holiday will be 240 rubles, and the maximum will be almost 70 thousand rubles for a bottle of a foreign drink, they specified.

Which wines dominate the shelf

On March 8, women will be congratulated with a glass of Russian sparkling wine. It accounts for about 70% of sales in physical terms, the chairman of the Presidium of the Association of Retail Trade Companies (ACORT) told Izvestia Stanislav Bogdanov. This is followed by sparkling wines from Italy, Spain, France, Portugal, South Africa, Chile and other countries. The assortment, depending on the store's format, includes up to 300 types of sparkling wine.

One of the key reasons for the high demand for domestic sparkling wine is the competitive price against the background of the rising cost of imported wines. In addition, many customers prefer domestic products," he said. — Now there are lines of Russian premium sparkling wines, which occupy the first places according to the results of blind tastings at international competitions, ahead of the famous French producers.

This year, in large retail chains, the minimum price of a 0.75-liter bottle of wine is 159 rubles, sparkling wine — from 240 rubles. For example, the price for the latter, excluding shares, starts from 279 rubles, for Prosecco — from 1.2 thousand, and wine from the French province of Champagne can be purchased from 3.9 thousand rubles. The cost of the most expensive champagne is 69,990 rubles, the Metro press service added to Izvestia.

The share of domestic sparkling wine sales is growing with the market and is close to 70%, said Dmitry Kulagin, Commercial Director of Inkerman Wine House LLC.

Over the past four years, we have seen an annual increase in the sparkling wine category. This happens for several reasons: a good price—quality ratio for domestic products, the role of state support for the wine industry, which helps to plant grapes, modernize production, and support the promotion of Russian wines on store shelves," he told Izvestia.

Which wines do customers prefer?

Indeed, the share of Russian sparkling wines on the retail shelf is growing, Roskachestvo told Izvestia. The most popular consumer price segment of 300-700 rubles is almost completely represented at the moment by sparkling wines of Russian production, they added.

"Sales also confirm this: the share of domestic sparkling wine in physical terms has approached 70%, and the growth rate has doubled the market average," the organization noted.

They also explained that several factors contribute to this in many ways. First of all, it is the support of the state, since 2022, the authorities have consistently increased import duties and excise taxes on this drink. It is also influenced by the fact that our sparkling wines are becoming increasingly popular with customers — 59% prefer them, according to surveys by the Roskachestvo Consumer Behavior Research Center in 2024 (+8 percentage points by 2023).

Domestic wine producers successfully supply the domestic market: in 2024, sparkling wine production increased by 24.7% compared to 2023, the organization noted.

For example, last year turned out in favor of the Krasnodar Territory: the region produced more than 71 million liters of wine (+30% by 2023). In Crimea, excluding Sevastopol, sparkling wine production remained at the same level — about 10 million tons. Dagestan is also showing good results: the region has grown in volume by more than 40% compared to 2023. Sparkling wine production in St. Petersburg increased by 18.2% to 20 million liters, while in the Moscow Region it jumped from almost zero levels to 7 million liters (+242% by 2023).

What determines the choice of consumers

As in the New Year period, Russians prefer the products of Russian winemakers, said Ladoga, an importer of alcoholic beverages. Depending on the region and the point of sale, the share of domestic sparkling wines can reach 50-70%, last year it was lower — a maximum of 60%.

— Not all Russians have accepted the new prices for their favorite imported sparkling wines after the increase in duties and excise taxes. Many began to look towards friendly countries and the products of Russian winemakers," they explained. — Quite a significant part of consumers have completely switched to the segment of spirits, for example gin, rum, whiskey, which are suitable for mixing with soft drinks, which allows them to remain in the "low degree".

Prices for high-quality Russian sparkling wines start around 600 rubles, the company noted. If we talk about foreign alcohol, then the bottom line will be completely different. For example, the cost of Prosecco, the most popular foreign sparkling wine, starts from 1 thousand rubles, the average price for it ranges from 1.7 thousand to 2.5 thousand. Champagne wines can be found from 3 thousand rubles, more serious houses start from 6 thousand rubles and almost indefinitely: prices for unique samples can reach numbers with five zeros.

Russia offers consumers the most affordable options, Alexander Lipilin, executive director of Fort wine trading company, told Izvestia. Domestic drinks can be found at prices starting from 450 rubles, while sparkling imported wines are almost non-existent in this segment. In the category of up to 1 thousand rubles, almost the entire range consists of Russian sparkling wines. Imported products are found in the middle and premium segments.

So, previously Prosecco could be found for 600 rubles, now its average price starts from 1.2 thousand rubles, it can be higher, it depends on the outlet, he added. The cost of French champagne starts from 5 thousand rubles per bottle, famous brands — Veuve Clicquot, Piper-Heidsieck, Louis Roederer, G.H. Mumm — will cost an average of 6-7 thousand rubles and above.

The choice of consumers largely depends on the budget: Russian sparkling wines are in the highest demand in the affordable segment. Prosecco is popular in the mid—range price range due to its light taste and versatility. In the premium segment, customers are more likely to choose champagne, especially well-known brands that are traditionally associated with a holiday and high status, Alexander Lipilin emphasized.
