A collection of remasters of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots and Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker is being released this month. The series has been adored by players for several decades, but in between releases and re-releases, many are looking for projects with similar atmosphere and mechanics. Izvestia has prepared a selection of games that continue the MGS tradition, offering a similar combination of stealth, tactics and memorable characters.

Hitman: World of Assassination

When it was released: 2021 (rebranded in 2023)
What to play on: PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2
Who will like it: MGS fans for masterful stealth

Every kill in Hitman: World of Assassination comes at the cost of a carefully thought-out plan. Thanks to the open levels and variety of features, this part can be called one of the best in the history of Hitman. A big find is the rogue mode "Freelancer", which noticeably changes the usual gameplay of the series. Instead of repeating tasks, the player receives random contracts in different locations, chooses a crime syndicate and gradually climbs to its top. Each task is unpredictable, and the cost of a mistake is high: if you fail, you can lose weapons, equipment, and part of the progress of the entire campaign. This turns Hitman into one of the most exciting modern stealth projects.

Sniper Elite 5

When it was released: 2022
What to play on: PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S
Who will like it: MGS fans for the well-developed sniper mechanics

In the role of sniper Carl Fairbairn, the player travels to France during World War II to infiltrate Nazi bases and eliminate opponents — covertly, from long distances. The tasks here allow for different approaches: you can, for example, sneak to the target or occupy an inaccessible bell tower and methodically shoot enemies with a rifle. The X-ray mode allows slow-motion viewing of spectacular hits, and the noise of explosions and other loud noises help mask the shots without raising the alarm at the base. In survival mode, you will have to fend off waves of more dangerous opponents, and the cooperative expands tactical possibilities: two players can occupy different positions and synchronize attacks.

Green Hell

When it was released: 2019
What to play on: PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch
Who will like it: MGS fans for the realism of the elements of survival

The game takes place in the Amazon jungle, where anthropologist Jake Higgins is trying to find his missing wife. The player has to keep an eye on hunger and thirst, treat wounds and infections, fight parasites and gradually increasing madness. Fans of the survival and jungle mechanics from Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater will find a lot of things familiar here, but Green Hell turns harsh realism to the maximum. In the game, you need to make tools yourself, build shelters and look for ways to treat them — neglected wounds lead to infections, and mental deterioration causes visual and auditory hallucinations. The gamer needs to figure out everything on his own — there are very few hints.

The Saboteur

When it was released: 2009
What to play on: PC, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360
Who will like it: MGS fans for covert operations in a historical setting

The Saboteur takes the user to occupied Paris during the Second World War. The main task is to help the Resistance and gradually weaken the Nazi control over the city. The Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame and other landmarks become part of the game space: they can be used as landmarks, shelters and observation points. One of the memorable features of the project is visual techniques. The occupied areas are almost completely devoid of color and are shown in black and white. As the territories are liberated, the colors return to the streets, vividly reflecting the successes of the Resistance. The tasks allow you to combine covert penetration with open combat, so The Saboteur in many ways resembles MGS Delta in its freedom of action.

Alpha Protocol

When it was released: 2010
What to play on: PC, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360
Who will like it: MGS fans for the dynamism of the consequences, which are influenced by the player's choice during operations

Another vintage and highly underrated representative of the spy stealth genre. Agent Michael Thorton finds himself at the center of an international conspiracy. The player's decisions in the dialogues determine the fate of the characters, relationships with organizations, and the further development of events. Role-playing mechanics allow you to develop skills, and the effectiveness of passing depends on the chosen leveling and equipment. The missions offer several routes and may change depending on the user's previous decisions. The characters remember the hero's actions: a former ally is able to interfere with the operation, and the enemy, left alive, can unexpectedly help. Reputation in the game affects not only the plot, but also the resources available during key tasks.

Invisible, Inc.

When it was released: 2015
What to play on: PC, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch
Who will like it: MGS fans for thoughtful assignments

Metal Gear Solid tests not only the player's stealth skills, but also the ability to think a few steps ahead. It is necessary to study the routes of enemies, plan the path and quickly rebuild if something goes wrong - victory often depends not so much on reaction as on preparation and improvisation. Invisible, Inc. is close to MGS in its approach to tactics. The user manages a small team of agents infiltrating corporate facilities. Each character has their own abilities that can change the outcome of the operation. Procedural generation changes the layout of objects and the location of opponents, so each mission has to be worked out anew. The agents are gradually being upgraded, but the intelligence of the opponents is also growing with them.

Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun

When it was released: 2016
What to play on: PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One
Who will like it: MGS fans for a similar tactical philosophy

Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun can offer users a rich tactical stealth experience in real time. A squad of five heroes from the Japanese Edo era is under control: ninja Hayato, samurai Mugen, master of disguise Aiko, trap specialist Yuki and sniper Takuma. Missions require a competent combination of character abilities: for example, while Mugen is distracting the guards, Aiko can get past enemies disguised as a geisha and clear the way for the rest of the team. Thinking through such clever combinations is the basis of the whole game. The difficulty here is high — one mistake often makes you re-go through an entire segment of the plot. This can be tiring for beginners, but for fans of demanding stealth, the risk of failure makes successful operations especially interesting.
