Family values: what movie premieres await us in July
The July film poster pleases with a variety of genres — from the wild comedy with time travel and a wedding "Bride Box Office" to the tooth-crushing in the truest sense of the word Hong Kong action movie "Living Fury" about the pursuit of a disconsolate father after his daughter's kidnappers. The cherry on the cake is the Cannes prize winner "Once upon a Time in Gaza", offering anyone who wants to guess the criteria by which the Cannes prizes are currently being distributed. And here, by the way, there was a family relationship: the directors of the film are twin brothers. Izvestia reports on the most interesting film premieres in July.
"Grandfather Fomich"
July 2nd
Fomich (Nikolai Dobrynin — "Molodezhka", "Admiral Kuznetsov") is a retired man who spends his life alone. Theoretically, he has a large family, but the children are in no hurry to visit their aging father, and the grandchildren seem to have completely forgotten about their grandfather. To finally see his family, Fomich decides on an adventurous plan — he tells his family that he is terminally ill and calls them to say goodbye. He hopes to finally feel the warmth of family in his home, but the opposite is true: differences in the views and characters of relatives make themselves felt immediately, and a real war is gradually breaking out in Fomich's house. Unwilling to give up, Fomich tries to realize his craziest idea — the last hope for peace and love in the family. And everything starts going according to his plan... or almost according to him.
The director of "Grandfather Fomich" Garik Petrosyan ("Love without size", "Mendelssohn") is a native of KVN, and, frankly, it's noticeable. It is difficult to imagine that relatives will immediately and unconditionally believe in the fatal illness of their grandfather, who looks like a walking advertisement for a sports club, but it is possible. That no one will point out the bad taste of the joke to a prankster who has disrupted a crowd of relatives to listen to the last "sorry" and instead staged a party with a sauna and chickens, is less believed. But the prize in the form of a box of gold, for which the family must embrace and build a bright future together, is no good anymore: this is where the blackness begins in crime films. It immediately seems that the film was conceived as a bloody horror, but artificial blood was not delivered. So I had to get out of it, crossing out the murder and inventing a fun ending.
Bride's Ticket Office
July 2nd
In the bright future of humanity, people have the opportunity to confidently distinguish truth from lies: a technical novelty — a digital detector — is easily able to expose any liar. This is where the charming adventurer Larik (Alexey Vorobyov — "Ekaterina", "Guest Performers"), a specialist in divorcing women for money, got burned. Another adventure failed, and Larick found himself in the clutches of the rich Boltzmann, who dreams of obtaining a valuable artifact — the Hymen Cup, promising eternal love. To do this, Larick is sent to 1913, where, in order to become the owner of the coveted cup, he will have to marry the emancipated Varvara. But Varya is not thinking about any marriage yet.: She has her own plans for life, and even Larick's charm won't make her turn away from her chosen path. But gradually it turns out that Varya and Larik have much more in common than one might have expected...
The future is an ephemeral matter, everyone imagines it in their own way, so it makes no sense to ask the creators of the Bride's Box Office why girls of future eras should return to the fashion of the 1980s, dressing up in flapping dresses made of hard and prickly foil, and why the walls in the restaurant are painted with mathematical formulas - they never added to anyone's appetite. With the past— it's another matter: too approximate an approach raises questions. The bride's cash register is not "something like a single women's club," as one of the characters says, but a kind of mutual aid cash register that helped girls from poor families with dowries. The box office did not search for suitors, so the bride fair at the beginning of the film looks somewhat artificial. Kokoshniks on fairground girls look completely wild: at the beginning of the twentieth century, they could not be found in the village, and the "bride cash desks" were a purely urban invention. Larick, along with the screenwriters, is the cherry on the cake, confused with Pushkin's dates of life, which is why one of Larick's most juicy jokes disappears. Which one? Take a look and you'll find out. If you want to.
"The Dante Codex"
July 9th
The film takes place in two time lines at once. In modern New York, the mafia boss hires writer and scientist Nick to determine the authenticity of the manuscript of the Divine Comedy, possibly created by the hand of Dante Alighieri himself. Unable to resist the temptation, Nick steals the manuscript and goes on the run from the mafia. In the second storyline, Dante himself, who fled from an unhappy marriage to Sicily, where he writes his main creation ...
Johnny Depp was going to direct the film based on the acclaimed novel by American journalist and novelist Nick Toshes, but Oscar, Golden Globe and Cesar winner Julian Schnabel ("The Spacesuit and the Butterfly", "Basquiat") intercepted the initiative. He managed to assemble a whole galaxy of star actors: Oscar Isaac ("Robin Hood", "Spider-Man: Across the Universes"), Gal Gadot ("Wonder Woman"), Jason Momoa ("Aquaman", "Conan the Barbarian"), as well as Al Pacino and John Malkovich played in the film. — no comment here. This is probably the most stellar premiere of the season: definitely worth a look.
"Living Rage"
July 9th
After the abduction of his daughter, an ordinary worker, Wang Wei, turns to the police for help, but corrupt law enforcement officers are completely indifferent to his trouble. Wang Wei begins his own investigation and goes on the trail of a criminal gang. At the same time, journalist Navin is trying to uncover the circumstances of his wife's mysterious disappearance. Joining forces, the heroes enter into a dangerous confrontation with an influential criminal organization, risking their lives to restore justice and save their relatives.
The film was directed by Kenji Tanigaki, who directed action scenes for such films as "Blade 2" and "Twilight Warriors." One of the main roles was played by Joe Taslim, known for the "Mortal Kombat" dilogy. In short, the picture was made by real professionals of tooth-crushing skirmishes, and the result turned out to be appropriate: fans of the genre compare it with the best films of the golden era of Hong Kong action films. "Living Fury" premiered at the Toronto Film Festival. The audience applauded standing up, and on the aggregator Rotten Tomatoes his rating reached 100%. According to the creators, the fights were filmed live, with minimal use of computer effects. So fans of the genre can not miss the premiere in any way.
"It's a hit!"
July 16
Rick once dreamed of fame, but now he sings at weddings to earn a living. Danny has known success, having been to the top of the rock charts, but now he is a "downed pilot", remembering the enthusiastic screams of his fans. They get to know each other at a concert, start playing together, and they even form a kind of friendship. Suddenly, when Rick shows his new friend one of his compositions, he realizes: Here is a hit that will help him return to fame! Indeed, the ballad composed by Rick revives Johnny's career — and now Rick has to try to fix the mistake and get his rightful piece of success.
The film was directed by John Carney, the author of "Once upon a Time" and "Rock'n'rollers," without changing its style: the dynamic plot easily intertwines comedy and drama against the backdrop of incessant rock'n'roll. The main roles were played by Paul Rudd ("Friends") and Nick Jonas ("Kingdom", "Midway"). Jonas himself has done several world tours as part of the Jonas Brothers family band and released a platinum solo single, so the king of the rock scene turned out to be a sight to behold: the guy knows what he's playing about.
