The Ascension of the Lord is the twelve—day feast, one of the 12 most important in Orthodoxy. The Meaning of Ascension

— This joyful status has a deep, Old Testament logic: already in the fourth and fifth centuries, the symbolic 40–day Easter period of rejoicing was deliberately opposed to the 40 days of Lenten tribulation. That is why the state and the Church have established this day as a holiday, despite the fact that it always falls on Thursday, the weekday of the week," Father Anthony noted.
This feature calls on believers in the very center of the working week to shift their focus from earthly concerns and literally "break away" from everyday life, joining the apostles on the Mount of Olives in joy of the Savior who defeated death.
The deepest prayers of Ascension, according to the priest, are of a Christological and eschatological nature: we pray not just for something earthly, but for the ascension of our own mind and heart to the mountain (obsolete. "up." — Izvestia), that is, to the sky.
— On this day, they ask God for the gift of realizing the greatness that our human nature, perceived by Christ, has already been glorified above the angelic ranks. The main prayer is that, having passed the path of repentance and living according to the Gospel, at the end of time we may not remain on earth, but be "caught up in the clouds" to meet the Lord, Who will come in the same way as He ascended. This is a prayer for courage and for the firm belief that Christ has not left the world, but remains in the Church, and that our daily lives, even on an ordinary working Thursday, become a constant prelude to His victory," concluded Fr Anthony.
Is it possible to pray at home for Ascension
What should we do if workdays or life circumstances do not allow us to visit the temple on Thursday?
— The answer follows organically from the very nature of the church tradition: prayer is not confined exclusively to the walls of the temple. Home prayer on Ascension Day is a time—honored practice when a believer, unable to attend the Liturgy, can and should read the festive texts on his own," said Priest Anthony.
The main hymns in the center of the household prayer rule on this day are: the troparion "Thou art ascended in glory, O Christ our God..." and the kontakion "Having fulfilled the vision for us..." (their texts are given below. — Izvestia), which succinctly express the essence of the holiday — the joy of the disciples and the promise of the inseparable presence of the Savior. To these, you can add the reading of the gospel description of the event — in the Gospel of Luke (24:50-51) or in Acts (1:9-11), turning the house into a place of jubilant prayer, similar to the Upper room of Zion.
