Beauty in movies often saves the world — and yet it usually happens in films released on the screen for International Women's Day. A month later, there are more options for saving the world. In "Zombie Vampires... from outer space!" the world will be saved by four not very beautiful eccentrics, in "The Avenger" — the still beautiful Milla Jovovich with the skills of a professional from special forces, in "Tamerlane" - a warrior with the makings of a brilliant commander. And only Paolo Sorrentino in "Grace" does not change his opinion: if the world is saved, it will be only by beauty in its most general sense. And he wants to believe. Izvestia tells about the most interesting film premieres in April.

"Vampires are zombies... from outer space!"

April 2

A flying saucer lands in the small town of Marlowe, and the locals immediately begin to disappear. Instead, the streets are filled with creepy zombies that suck their blood like vampires. And this is not surprising, because Count Dracula is at the head of the invasion of zombie vampires, who, armed with the latest space technology, plans to destroy the inhabitants of Marlow, populating the city with undead. The dream team will have to save the world from bloodsuckers: an old suspicious police chief, a zealous neophyte policeman, a local goth fashionista and a sad waitress. And there is no doubt that they will succeed.

The comedy of the absurd, directed by Canadian Michael Stasco, will be a real gift to moviegoers. Stasco turns images from a wide variety of film epochs and genres inside out and makes them the subject of ridicule. Fans will recognize both the iconic image of Bela Lugosi and Leslie Nielson from the Mel Brooks parody. The attentive viewer will find references here to "Elvira, Mistress of Darkness", and to "Naked Pistol", and to "Mars attacks!" by Tim Burton, and to science fiction paintings of the 1950s with their primitive technique: obsessively showing the viewer the strings on which flying saucers of vampires are suspended, Stasco reminds us that the computer has recently come to the aid of science fiction filmmakers. Stasco has plenty of room for jokes: the director of author's films holds the position of professor at the University of Windsor Film Faculty at the same time, so he knows the topic well.

"The cosmos is falling asleep"

April 2

Pavel, a modest young man from the remote village of Shoina on the White Sea, is studying rocket engineering at the prestigious St. Petersburg University. He dreams of building a rocket of the future — a solid rocket that won't have to drop steps during flight. The teachers consider Pasha to be one of the most talented students, he is invited to an international conference and is offered a grant to study abroad... But the bright prospects collapse overnight: they report from home that Pasha's father has died, and he urgently needs to return to Shoina, which is covered with mysterious sands, to support his depressed mother, help his younger brother, and figure out what the family should do next. However, you can drop out of university, but giving up your dream is much more difficult...

The village of Shoina on the White Sea shore, surrounded by surreal white sand dunes, really exists; someone even called it the Russian Macondo. So the incredible nature of the Russian North gave the debutant director Anton Mamykin a magnificent gift - full of symbolism images of life sinking into the sand and the soil sinking under his feet, shrouding in a mysterious Marquez flair a work that would otherwise have turned out to be drearily straightforward. The second gift went to Mamykin from the lead actor Mark Eidelstein, who won the title of the best actor of the younger generation. It was impossible to find a less suitable type for the role of the son of a village tractor driver than a young man with high cheekbones, delicate features and suffering from all eras in his huge eyes. Nevertheless, using talent and intuition, Edelstein pulls out this role, consciously immersing his character in a world of symbols, conventions and absurdity.

"Tamerlane"

April 2

XIV century. The Mongol Empire is in decline, and the Great Silk Road is no longer safe.: Civil strife breaks out throughout it. The young warrior Timur is faced with the betrayal of his friends, receives severe wounds and experiences personal losses, but all this is not enough to force him to give up the struggle for the power that rightfully belongs to him. He gathers supporters, wins large-scale bloody battles and supports potential allies, step by step becoming the only one who can unite disparate lands, return peace to the Great Silk Road and determine the fate of the entire region, rightfully occupying the throne of its ruler.

Uzbekistan's contribution to the joint production with the United States consisted mainly in providing historical spaces in which the Hollywood budget allowed recreating the ancient cities of the Great Silk Road almost in full size. Tamerlane, one of the greatest military leaders in history, was indeed born in these places, in the vicinity of Samarkand. Otherwise, following reality turned out to be worse: Christian Mortensen (NCIS: Los Angeles), who played the main role, is too Caucasian for the Turkic-Mongol Tamerlane with slanted and greedy eyes, and the romantic line corresponds more to our humane times than to the biography of one of the most brutal rulers in history. But all this pales before the grandeur of the scenery and the naturalism of large-scale battles. No one will teach the story of Tamerlane, but the spectacle is certainly worth watching.

"The Avenger"

April 23rd

Special Agent Nikki (Milla Jovovich — "The Fifth Element", "Breathe") has more than a solid combat experience, but now she lives a quiet home life and brings up her daughter. However, the peaceful idyll ends unexpectedly: Nikki wakes up in an abandoned factory and learns that her daughter Chloe has been abducted. Nikki will have to remember her old skills and free the girl. However, the closer she gets to the terrible solution of what is happening, the more willing there are to end it. As a result, Nikki has to escape not only from criminals, but also from the police and the army, but the special agent's skills and determination to save her daughter at all costs help her move forward.

The plot, in which Milla Jovovich's heroine finds herself in an unexpected place with a full set of skills of a trained special forces soldier, is familiar to fans of fighters from the first "Resident Evil". Alas, almost all of her films in this genre turned out to be failures to varying degrees, so the creators of "The Avenger" took a different path, deciding to do without supernatural horrors and make just a strong action movie about a superwoman. They seem to have succeeded: Jovovich, dressed in black leather and holding a huge cannon in her hand, looks very convincing. In general, there is something to see.

"The Adventures of the Yellow Briefcase"

April 23rd

A wonderful doctor can treat not only chickenpox and flu, but also sadness, fears, cowardice and indifference. It is not surprising that he has many patients in all cities, from oligarchs to pilots. The parents of Petya, a domestic boy who prefers to spend time alone because he is afraid to communicate with other children, also come to him. The doctor is ready to help both him and Toma, who has completely stopped laughing, but his suitcase with magic medicines is stolen, and Petya has to become braver in order to defeat the villain and help other children. As a result, by saving the doctor's magic pills, he finds true friends and gets rid of his illness without any medication.

To improve a good thing is only to spoil it. The generation of current parents, and even more so grandparents, still remembers the film adaptation of Sofia Prokofiev's books with the magnificent comic duet of Evgeny Lebedev and Tatiana Peltzer. The creators of the current film decided to bring it closer to modern realities by adding colors, modern urban landscapes, a not too convincing detective line and a completely unnecessary moral to the picture: instead of treating simple and sweet children's fears, sadness and chatter, wonderful pills here are designed to eradicate social vices like the pampering of an oligarchic son or the enthusiasm of schoolchildren. social media, which, alas, even magic pills cannot do. The duet of the Doctor and the Grandmother has also been modernized: Tatyana Peltzer's place in woolen flip-flops has been taken by the determined Lyudmila Artemyeva, who, it seems, did not have time to change her image after the film Baba Yaga Saves the World. The villain, played by Pavel Priluchny, wears black leather so that God forbid he is mistaken for a decent person, and is accompanied by a robot dog that embodies a simple idea: not everything fashionable is for the good. Indeed it is.

"Grace"

April 30th

Italian President Mariano de Santis is a cautious centrist who never makes unnecessary movements on the political front. He is also an elderly man going through a personal crisis: at the end of his presidential term, it will be time for him to retire, which means that nothing will be the same again. His daughter, a professional lawyer and his father's closest assistant, encourages him to sign a law on euthanasia, which is ambiguously perceived in society and cursed in the Catholic world, whose heart is Rome. There are also two clemency petitions awaiting his signature: one from an elderly man who strangled his wife, who suffered from Alzheimer's disease, and the second from a young woman who stabbed her rapist husband. De Santis doesn't know what to do, repeatedly trying to hide from the need to make a decision — but it's as impossible as hiding from himself.

Paolo Sorrentino's film opened the Venice Film Festival last year and fully deserved it. Sorrentino is not called Fellini's spiritual heir for nothing: with the same boldness, he mixes the lush baroque of the video series with the surgically precise minimalism of psychological images. At the same time, Fellini's characters are as redundant as the landscapes surrounding them: they are cramped on the screen, they make a lot of noise, gesticulate widely, and commit vivid follies. The element of Sorrentino is understatement: his characters are closed, but the director draws their images with incredible depth and precision — through half—smiles, restrained gestures, furtive glances. Sorrentino is about beauty, even if it's about politics, here every frame is built as carefully as the paintings of Renaissance masters, and admires just as openly. So, first of all, it's beautiful...
