AN-22: what is known about the aircraft, characteristics

The AN-22 Antey is the first Soviet turboprop wide—body transport aircraft, as well as the largest turboprop aircraft in the world.

It was developed in the 1960s at the 473 Experimental Design Bureau (later Antonov Design Bureau, now Antonov State Enterprise, Kiev, Ukraine).

The aircraft is designed for long-range transportation of heavy bulky equipment and troops, airborne landings, and transportation of the wounded. The name "Antey" was given in honor of the giant from ancient Greek mythology.

The AN-22 was mass-produced in 1965-1975 in the Uzbek SSR at the Tashkent Aviation Production Association named after V. P. Chkalov (TAPOiCH, now Tashkent Mechanical Plant, Uzbekistan). A total of 69 copies were produced.

The aircraft is built according to the aerodynamic scheme of a high-wing aircraft with a two-keeled tail and a tail cargo hatch, with four NK-12MA turboprop engines suspended under the wing and with twin propellers.

The main characteristics of the AN-22:

— length — 57.3 m;

— height — 12.5 m;

— wingspan — 64.4 m;

— take—off weight - 205 tons (normal), 225 tons (maximum);

— lifting capacity — 60 tons;

— practical range — 5,225 km;

— cruising speed — 560 km/h;

— crew — 5-7 people (depending on the modification).

In addition, the AN-22 can carry up to 290 people or 150 paratroopers with equipment.

Two modifications of the aircraft were also created: the AN-22A (with air starters) and the AN-22P3 ("carrier"; for transporting large-sized parts of the AN-124 and AN-225 aircraft on an external suspension). There were other modifications in development, but they were not implemented.
