If there are no events in the theater, it gradually turns into a conveyor belt where everything is clear, familiar and there is no unpredictability, Konstantin Khabensky believes. The People's Artist of Russia starred in the third season of the successful TV series Method, which was released on Kinopoisk. But besides that, he has had enough shocks at the Moscow Art Theater, which he has been leading for four years. And, as Konstantin Khabensky admits, now the Moscow Art Museum has a direct connection with space. Izvestia met with the People's Artist of Russia and talked about cinema, theater and... casino.

"I'm afraid of horror movies"

— Director Yuri Bykov talks about "The Method" — it's a scary tale. The story is about a sad clown who is looking for other sad clowns. Don't you mind being called a clown?

— I don't mind being called a clown at all. Moreover, I preach my desire to someday achieve, in a good way, clowning. This is the ultimate acting aerobatics.

— Do you go to the circus?

— Not as often as we would like.

— What do you think the series "Method" is about?

— I believe that this is a story about people whose childhood was very severely violated or traumatized. And we continue to monitor the fate of these people.

— Have you ever come across prototypes or just similar characters in your life?

"I think you've come across some." It's just that maybe they're not as vividly revealed as the characters in our series.

— Quite a lot of time has passed since the second season of "Method". How did Yuri Bykov convince you to continue this story?

— You know, a lot of time has passed between the first and second seasons of "Method". The pauses were exactly five years long. There was no need to convince me, especially Yuri Bykov. He just called and said he knows how to restart this project. I asked: "Do you know for sure?" — "I know for sure!" - "That's it, go ahead!"

— You trusted his feeling.

He is a man who writes, gushes, fantasizes. I have no questions for Yuri Bykov. He said in a nutshell that this would be Meglin's story in the direction of a certain team that he gathers around himself. More precisely, this is his attempt to save people with a terrible childhood at least some kind of life. All the actors are wonderful, they all cope luxuriously with the fate of their characters, which they got. But I really like that they absolutely do not repeat each other.

— The series is scary, sometimes metaphorical. Are you afraid to watch movies and TV series about maniacs?

— I'm afraid of horror movies themselves. It didn't work out for me with them. I try not to get too involved in them as a spectator. And the story of a maniac, if it's a human story, is interesting to me, just like any study of the human mental structure is interesting.

— But maniacs, by and large, are manipulators.

— You say that as if your life is connected with a huge number of maniacs!

— I read about Chikatilo. He was an exquisite manipulator. And in his last speech, before his execution, he even brought tears to those who watched this video afterwards.

— Because he has his own truth, his own beliefs. You haven't read about that psychiatrist who talked and promoted the confessions of this man.

— No, I haven't read it. Have you read it?

— Here, too, you can ask the question, which of them is more talented at this. But some of them allow themselves to realize their fantasies, while others direct them to a completely different matter. I'm not saying right now that this is a man from the same background, but if he found a common language with a maniac, it means it's similar.

"If there are no events in the theater, it gradually turns into a conveyor belt"

— What was extreme for you in the "Method"?

— In general, when you go on set in any movie, and it's not extreme, it means you've come to the wrong place. I mean, not only the scenes of fires and so on, but also the tension and temperature of the human soul.

— Konstantin Yuryevich, you are a multifaceted person...

— What makes you think that?

— Not everyone will be able to engage in theater — to direct, act, stage plays, and even act in films and TV series. How many projects are currently in progress?

One is the series "Casino" about a student of the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics who, in order to save her family, drops out of school and gets a job at the first gambling establishment in Moscow. The project will be released next year on Kinopoisk. But I don't talk about work that I haven't done and haven't seen myself yet. I have enough work to distribute my forces.

— Have you ever played in a casino?

— I played occasionally. I enjoyed it immensely, because I went with a firm mindset — I'm going to lose.

— Have you ever had a win?

- of course.

— You've been running an Art Theater for four years. From an athlete's point of view, this is an Olympic cycle. Tell me, is there something in your piggy bank that you are proud of? What can you be awarded a medal for?

— What medal, tell me first.

"Gold."

— I understood the dignity, but in honor of what?

— For a good job.

— I managed to assemble a very good administrative team that helps and takes on a huge part of the work that I would not have been able to handle. I am glad that we have a vibrant creative life in the theater again and projects are coming out. We have managed to create a new tradition of Art Theater related to astronauts who are preparing to go into orbit. The award has appeared.

— There is also a short film competition.

— We are also learning this. It is wonderful that the phrase "Chekhov Moscow Art Theater" evokes joy and respect.

— Maybe you should ask for another scene, for the scope? For example, to launch film projects there.

— We launch film projects at the Mosfilm studio, which is specially designed for this purpose. For example, the play "Once upon a time there was a House." It was rehearsed and filmed at Mosfilm, and then released in cinemas.

— Why do you need so many things at the Moscow Art Theater? This is an additional burden.

— The theater is an eventful place. It doesn't always work out that every project becomes an event. But when at least one year later, whether it's a performance, an award, or the launch of a spaceship into orbit, it's good. Because if there are no events in the theater, it gradually turns into a conveyor belt where everything is clear, familiar and there is no unpredictability.

"Some things don't need to be deciphered, you'll figure them out for yourself."

— The other day you had the premiere of the play "Idiots" directed by Sergey Volkov. Before that, Moscow was shocked by the "Cabal of saints" by Yuri Kvyatkovsky. Now you can't buy tickets for either the first or the second performance. They are not available until the end of January. Everything is sold out. Is this the artistic director's dream, so that the audience rushes to the Moscow Art Theater?

— It means that we just got into the subject, the title, the actors. And thus we got into the audience's interest.

— Whose idea was it to invite Nikolai Tsiskaridze?

— It was the idea of the creative team when we conceived the production and decided on the casting issue.

— Besides Tsiskaridze, could anyone else claim to be Louis the Great?

— No, only Nikolai Maksimovich.

— The artists say that you can't play badly next to you, you have to reach out to you, you have to match.

— Flattery is undisguised.

— What are your characters apologizing for at the very end of the play?

— Some things don't need to be deciphered, you'll figure them out for yourself. When I tell you why, there won't be any live theater in it anymore.
