Kurchatov Street, 12+

Directed by Sergey Airapetov. General Producer: Vladimir Tyulin
A new documentary from NMG DOC is an immersion into the scale of Kurchatov's personality and his grandiose discoveries that changed the course of world history. On November 20, 1962, U.S. President John F. Kennedy ordered the lifting of the blockade of Cuba. This event marked the end of the Caribbean crisis, the peak of the military—political confrontation in Soviet-American relations during the Cold War, when the world was on the verge of a nuclear catastrophe.
The Soviet nuclear program, spearheaded by the legendary Igor Kurchatov, made it possible to achieve military parity with the United States. For decades, this nuclear shield has served as a powerful deterrent to the most radical politicians from reckless actions against our country.
In the film, together with its authors, we will visit Ozersk, a closed city in the Chelyabinsk region, closely associated with the name of Igor Kurchatov. Not only the world's first nuclear power plant is located here, but also the strategic Mayak plant. At this facility, spent nuclear fuel from all nuclear power plants in the country is processed and enriched for reuse. Viewers will see the interiors of these secret facilities, including the very control panel of the first nuclear power plant, behind which the founder of the Soviet atomic project once worked.
