Large businesses will start participating in career guidance for schoolchildren. A federal project is being launched in Russia to help children choose professions related to the exact sciences, especially in the field of IT. Employees of T-Bank, VK, Yandex, Ozon, Avito and Sber will take part, Izvestia found out. They will tell you exactly which skills are important in specific positions. Whether this will help to improve the training of specialists in the long term and close the shortage of personnel in specific areas is discussed in the Izvestia article.

How will business participate in career guidance for schoolchildren

The federal career guidance project "Lessons of T" is being launched in Russia, which is aimed at helping schoolchildren choose professions related to exact sciences. Izvestia was told about this in T-Education, the educational platform of T-Bank.

They added that more than 70,000 graduates of T-Education across the country will be able to return to their schools where they studied and share with high school students their own career experience working in major Russian organizations. The speakers will be current employees of leading technology companies, including T-Bank, VK, Yandex, Ozon, Avito and Sber. Uroki T plans to develop and extend it to over 50 million T-Bank customers.

The project's mission is to help students consciously choose a career path in technical and engineering specialties at the start of their professional career in the IT field.

The project is intended to show students the practical application of school knowledge in real life. For example, children will be able to learn how to build a platform that will save the company more than 200 million rubles, and how to set up an effective targeting system based on billions of dollars of data. And also how to cluster user messages using language models and develop an analytics and report collection system based on client transactions, including with AI tools.

The stories of work on large—scale projects from representatives of various IT professions will reveal exactly which skills — from deep knowledge of mathematics and algorithms to mastery of specific technologies - proved to be critically important. This will help in the training of qualified and motivated IT personnel.

The Lessons of T project was scaled up from the T-Education corporate initiative, launched in 2023. The company plans to develop the project and extend it to all residents of the country.

— Schoolchildren often do not have the opportunity to look behind the scenes of their future work and understand what they will actually do. We want to help children go through this path as consciously as possible and choose a profession that will become a source of inspiration," said Varvara Smirnova, director of T—Education.

Among the IT—related technical areas are specialists in business analysis, artificial intelligence, information security, site reliability engineers, system and product analysts, Python, backend, frontend, web and mobile developers, and many others.

What projects are there to help students choose a profession?

Other large-scale projects are being carried out in the country to help students choose a profession. At the end of September, an All-Russian parent meeting dedicated to this topic was held in all regions of the country. The Ministry of Education told parents about the benefits of career guidance for schoolchildren, how to communicate with teenagers correctly and how to help them choose their professional vocation.

Today, more than 8.5 million students in grades 6-11 are covered by a single career guidance model implemented in all schools of the country. It includes specialized pre-professional classes (engineering, medical, space, IT, pedagogical, entrepreneurial), academic activities and a number of other areas, according to the website of the Ministry of Education.

Izvestia sent a request to the Ministry of Education and Science to find out if they support career guidance projects from businesses.

Launching early career guidance is an extremely important step today, says Farida Mirzabalayeva, Associate Professor of the Basic Department of the Russian Chamber of Commerce and Industry "Human Resource Management" at Plekhanov Russian University of Economics. According to her, early career guidance gives students the opportunity to consciously choose a profession, develop the necessary competencies and skills, taking into account the needs of the economy.

— This is especially true in conditions of a serious shortage of personnel, a qualification gap and a growing demand for specialists in the exact sciences and the IT sector. Nowadays, students are increasingly practicing in the real sector, which contributes to their deeper understanding of the profession and the labor market. However, the role of employers in the career guidance process has so far been fragmented and inconsistent. It is important to strengthen this interaction in order to help students navigate the world of professions and understand the specifics of various labor markets," Farida Mirzabalayeva added.

Today, children are growing up in a rapidly changing labor market, and early career guidance reduces the risk of accidental career choice and increases motivation to study: students understand why they are studying certain subjects and what opportunities open up in the future, says Irina Prosviryakova, an international expert on team leadership and psychological security, director of the Leader Factor Center. This is especially true in areas where years of systematic training are required, such as IT and engineering.

— Using the example of applicants entering the Faculty of Mathematics, we clearly see that it is very difficult for school graduates to imagine what people do in high-tech industries (from research to fintech), so key decisions in life (about choosing a university specialty, first job, supervisor) are often unprepared, which later leads to burnout disappointment in the learning process itself and in their abilities. It seems that well—tested career guidance can help avoid such problems," said Alexandra Skripchenko, Dean of the HSE Faculty of Mathematics, Doctor of Physico-Mathematical Sciences.

Will early career guidance help in the fight against staff shortages

It is important that career guidance is not a one-time action, but a systematic program integrated into school education, Irina Prosviryakova believes. According to her, such initiatives are supported by the Ministry of Education and regional authorities. This is fundamentally important: the state sets the framework and provides the infrastructure without which career guidance will not become widespread and accessible.

At the same time, the business initiative is also a timely step, Irina Prosviryakova is sure. Only employers themselves can show children what specific skills are in demand and what is really important in the market.

The traditional school–university–work trajectory is losing its monopoly, said Olga Nemirovich, head of educational programs at the Skolkovo Education Transformation Center. The business is actively developing deferred recruitment programs, identifying talents already in schools and colleges. In many ways, this may be due to the discrepancy between what is taught in educational institutions and what businesses really need, the expert believes.

She added: in an attempt to influence the process of training future personnel, employers begin to interact with educational organizations as early as possible, which allows companies to form a talent pool tailored to their own needs.

Large organizations such as Sber, VK and Avito have experienced an acute shortage of qualified personnel on their own experience and understand that it is necessary to prepare their future reserve today, agreed Sergey Lebedev, CEO of Orient Systems development company. The value of their participation lies in their practice orientation: they do not bring dry theory to schools, but live cases, real tasks and an understanding of those competencies that will be in demand on the market in 5-7 years. This is an investment in our own personnel security and in the stability of the entire industry.

At the same time, the authorities see the role of an integrator as a key task: creating a single federal digital platform that will combine all the best career guidance programs and business resources and make them easily accessible to every school, the expert added.
