Sports weekend with Izvestia
Football
The Russian Championship. Dynamo — Spartak, Baltika — Zenit

After a two-week pause for the national team games, the Russian Football Championship among the teams of the Russian Premier League (RPL) resumes. The upcoming eighth round will be the first autumn one. Two matches are the most interesting in it. One of them with a loud sign is the Dynamo and Spartak Moscow derby. At the same time, both teams started the season poorly, with Spartak in sixth place and Dynamo in ninth. Therefore, the game of Kaliningrad "Baltika" and St. Petersburg "Zenit" can be formally called the central one. Baltika is sensationally in fourth place, having not lost a single match in the current championship. And Zenit is one line lower.

The KHL Regular Season. Salavat Yulaev — Avtomobilist, Avangard — Dynamo (Moscow), Ak Bars - Metallurg

A week has already passed since the start of the new KHL season. The clubs have played more than one bright match during this time. Some games had unexpected results. The upcoming weekend in the regular season will be all the more interesting. Three confrontations are particularly worth highlighting in them. On Friday in Ufa, Salavat Yulaev, which was renewed after budget cuts, but started the tournament well, will host Avtomobilist Yekaterinburg, one of the contenders for leadership in the Eastern Conference. In a day, two long—term sworn rivals will meet in Omsk - the local Avangard and Dynamo Moscow. And on Sunday we will have a meeting of the two most titled clubs of our hockey of the last 30 years — Kazan Ak Bars will host Magnitogorsk Metallurg on its ice.
September 12, 17:00, Ufa Arena (Ufa). September 13, 2 p.m., G-Drive Arena (Omsk). September 14, 17:00, Tatneft Arena (Kazan). Live broadcasts on KHL TV, KHL Prime and Kinopoisk
Fighting
World championship

Freestyle, Greco-Roman and women's wrestling are sports in which our athletes were among the first to be admitted to international competitions in a neutral status after the mass suspension that occurred in 2022. Therefore, the World Cup starting on Sunday in Zagreb is not the first tournament where Russians compete in defiance of sanctions against most other Russian representatives. Nevertheless, the main star of freestyle wrestling, two—time Olympic champion Abdulrashid Sadulaev, did not get there either. He was not granted a visa again, for the same reason he had previously missed a number of major competitions. The rest of our stars will go to the capital of Croatia, where on the last day of this week the first winners in four weight categories will be announced — up to 61, 70, 86, 125 kg in freestyle wrestling. The World Cup will be held until September 21 inclusive.

The Big Swiss 2025 Tournament

A major chess tournament with a prize pool of $625,000 is coming to an end in Samarkand. There are four rounds left in it. The competition will end on Monday. The winners and finalists for men and women will receive tickets to the candidates tournament for the World Championship match. The candidates tournament will be held in 2026. So far, Russian Ekaterina Lagno, who is in second place among women, has a good chance of getting there.
