The painting "Madonna and Child" by Giovanni Francesco Barbieri, nicknamed Guercino, was considered lost for a long time. For the first time in almost a hundred years, the work is returning to the museum space as part of a project at the Pushkin Museum. The painting "Madonna and Child" since 1811 belonged to Napoleon's wife, Empress Josephine, who acquired it from the antiquarian Ludovico Varisco. After Josephine's death, the painting was inherited by her daughter Hortense. Guercino's work appeared in Russia thanks to Alexander I: in 1820, he bought it for the Imperial Hermitage Museum. The painting appeared in Moscow 42 years later, when some works from the Hermitage were included in the collection of the Rumyantsev Museum.
