Tracksuits, burnout kits, audio speakers and, of course, satchels with stationery — these sets were presented to the children of Donetsk by the organizers of the action "Backpack for a schoolboy" before September 1. September 1 will be a truly special day in the capital of the DPR. After the front line was moved away from the city and educational institutions were out of reach of the Ukrainian artillery, schools decided to resume full-time education for the first time in several years.

School fees

The preparation for school in Donetsk is now, of course, different from other Russian regions. Since 2022, children have not attended educational institutions, as the Ukrainian military shelled residential areas. All this time, the training was conducted remotely.

However, after the AFU units were driven back from the city, Donetsk schools were actively restored. On September 1, all renovated secondary schools will reopen their doors to children.

As part of the "Backpack for a Schoolboy" campaign, more than 100 disabled children and children from socially vulnerable families received not only everything they needed for school, but also gifts they had long dreamed of.

Several dozen children and parents gathered in a small hall for this purpose.

The organizers of the action tried to fulfill the cherished dreams of the children. Someone wanted audio speakers to listen to music, someone wanted a device for burning wood or a large set for creativity (for drawing and modeling). Finally, these modest childhood wishes have come true.

— Thank you! — so the boy thanked the adults for the gift and clutched the burning kit to his chest.

The girl who received the creative kit was confused, lost her way, saying words of gratitude. But the most important thing was that her eyes shone with happiness. This day is special for children, and they will remember it for a long time.

Representatives of republican ministries and volunteers addressed the audience with short greetings, and video messages from peers from the Belgorod region, the Far East and those who collected gifts were shown on the screen.

— Thank you for the children's smiles, — the parents thanked.

The event was hosted by one of the organizers, Ekaterina Retinskaya, a finalist in the Donbass personnel competition. My Heroes", the regional equivalent of the federal contest "Time of Heroes". Ekaterina is already undergoing an internship at the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection of the DPR, and Minister Irina Kutenko has become her mentor.

— The previous five years of work were devoted to the social block, — said Ekaterina. "In the Department for Social Support of Retired Military Personnel and Patriotic Education under the head of the DPR, she dealt with the rehabilitation and rehabilitation of combat veterans, and later with the search for dead and missing defenders of the Fatherland," Ekaterina says about how she gained the necessary experience for today's social work.

Over the past year, the girl has been actively organizing humanitarian missions in support of a special military operation, knowing firsthand about the needs of the front. She's a combat veteran and a reserve officer.

Many children could not come. Some of those receiving assistance are those who are bedridden, have limited mobility, and simply live in areas where public transport is almost nonexistent. Home delivery of gifts was organized especially for them by visiting crews.

Assistance from military personnel

367 volunteers from eight regions of Russia took part in the action "Backpack for a schoolboy", who were engaged in collecting, sorting, packing and sending gifts.

In addition, military personnel and veterans of the SVO helped to collect children for school — this is another regional feature.

— It is encouraging to see that our society is consolidated as never before. The proof is an event. People from all over our country responded and took part. It's worth a lot," a serviceman from the North brigade of the Russian Ministry of Defense's Volunteer Corps with the call sign Musta greeted the gathered children and parents.

The military helped with logistics, collected and delivered everything necessary from the regions.

Among the participants of the action for children is the finalist of the contest "Donbass. His Heroes" by Kirill Gunko. He came to Donetsk from Dnepropetrovsk in 2015, long before the start of his military career.

He says that his parents' upbringing brought him to the militia.

— I felt that my place was at the front, that ideas needed to be fought for. That's why I packed my things and boarded the bus in a shirt, tie, and jacket," Kirill recalls.

Prior to the military special operation, he participated in battles in the area of the Avdiivka industrial zone and in the south of the DPR as part of various units of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the People's Militia of the DPR.

— Then I flew to Wagner and worked in Africa. And from there, when the war began, I flew by plane to Popasnaya, then the capture of Svetlodarsk, Soledar and Bakhmut (Artemovsk)," Kirill recalls.

After completing his contract at the PMC, Kirill began to engage in humanitarian demining, as he already had the necessary skills and experience, and also tried himself as a military journalist. For the contest "Donbass. My Heroes" submitted an application through the website.

— I was encouraged to do this by my squad leader with the call sign Kot, Hero of Russia, he himself is the winner of such a competition in Krasnodar. He says, "I have a head on my shoulders, why not try it." And everything turned around: I passed the tests, passed an interview, completed training and went on an internship at the Department of information policy of the administration of the head and government of the DPR," Kirill says, as he found himself in a new role for himself.

He has never regretted his choice.
