Creative standards: why Mashkov took the actors to the football field and to the rope
Evgeny Marcelli stood up to the bar, Alexander Vershinin went swimming, and Viktor Dobronravov took up a cue — the first Spartakiad of the Russian Theater Society was held in Moscow, bringing together about one and a half thousand artists. The program included almost three dozen disciplines, including running, swimming, football and billiards. Among the fans was a correspondent from Izvestia, who broke his voice as he watched the competition turn into dramatic one-man shows in the pouring rain.

The action, which is not inferior in intensity to the battles on the stage, unfolded on May 25 at the site of the MGIMO sports and recreation complex. Evgeny Marcelli, artistic director of the Mossovet Theater, took the bar — he stood for a record 10 minutes. He and his colleagues in the creative department had such a thirst for sporting victories at the first Spartakiad of the Russian Theater Society. It was held as part of the celebration of the 150th anniversary of the Union of Theatrical Figures of the Russian Federation.

Evgeny Kamenkovich, the artistic director of the Peter Fomenko Workshop, was warming up nearby.
— I hope that they will let me play football. I'm too old, young people are eager to fight. But we have a well—played team, we play twice a week," he expressed hope in an interview with Izvestia, recalling Oleg Menshikov's tournaments.
And the artistic director of the Theater on Trubnaya, Dmitry Astrakhan, coordinated the maneuvers of the wards: his actresses defended the right to be considered the strongest in badminton and, by the way, reached the finals.

Before entering the stadium, everyone was warned: heels are prohibited! One actress in high-heeled shoes lamented: "How am I going to effectively run away from competitors in the relay?"
The weather was also capricious, and in the best traditions of Chekhov's drama — torrential rain, then scorching sun. However, the artists perceived it as special effects of an unfolding large-scale scene. To the Lyube group's hit "From the Volga to the Yenisei", the coach did not let them relax.: "We stretch, we stretch our ego, it must be big for an artist! The next exercise is to promote our acting career."
Despite the instructions, Alexander Vershinin, People's Artist of the Russian Federation, who defended the honor of the Maly Theater in swimming, was unlucky — in a short distance he was overtaken by a clever guy with the inscription "USSR" on his trunks, who occupied the next lane.
In the late afternoon, the tug of war became the epicenter of passions. The nerves of the fans were also like a tightrope. The head of the STD, Vladimir Mashkov, whistled and encouraged the participants, and even gave Sovremennik's native troupe a special motivation — he promised to write out a prize for the victory.
This day of the Spartakiad was the final one. Before that, the artists had already managed to prove themselves in various disciplines. For example, Tabakerka won gold in billiards — Sergey Ugryumov and Alexander Fisenko showed the class in the team competition. Viktor Dobronravov also took up the cue, speaking on behalf of the Evgeny Vakhtangov Theater. He took silver in the individual competition.

"In the year of the 150th anniversary of the Union of Theatrical Figures, we are starting the countdown for our big theater Spartakiad," Mashkov told Izvestia. — I hope this holiday will be repeated next year. We will be able to increase the number of participants. And our rolling cup will be awarded to the next winning theater.

The highlight of the program was a football match between the Bolshoi Theater and the Army Theater. Soloists and orchestra musicians showed up at the GABT. Nikita Kuklachev also entered the field — the grandson of the legendary Yuri Kuklachev preferred the ballet troupe of the country's main theater to cat training.

The role of goalkeeper went to the soloist of the opera company, bass—baritone Alexander Krasnov. Only yesterday he was singing "Yolanthe", and now he was demonstrating his might on the field.
— I'm busy with all the leading repertoire.: "Tosca", "Rigoletto", "The Tsar's Bride", "Mazeppa". Sport helps the vocal cords a lot. It's the muscles," he said.
The Bolshoi Theatre eventually won the match (5:1). After the final whistle, the exhausted performers were greeted by a field kitchen: buckwheat porridge, Uzbek pilaf and herbal tea. The debut theatrical Spartakiad proved that artists can fight not only for ovations, but also for seconds, goals and medals.
