The height of the snow cover in Moscow has reached a record high again — on Wednesday, February 25, it was 75 cm, meteorologists told Izvestia. The whole day in the capital is fine — as experts promise, this is the last snowfall of this calendar winter. Compared to other regions of the European part of Russia, Moscow records are not so high — in Mordovia, Nizhny Novgorod and Ryazan regions, snow cover reaches 130 cm. At the same time, spring will begin to be felt in the center of Russia on March 1.

The highest snowdrifts in Central Russia

After a series of prolonged snowfalls, Moscow has set a new record for the height of snowdrifts. According to Tatiana Pozdnyakova, a leading specialist at the Meteonosti news agency, on Wednesday their height at the VDNKh weather station reached 75 cm.

— We have set a new record for February 25th. Before that, it was 70 cm and was last recorded in 2010," the forecaster explained to Izvestia.

At the same time, there is more snow in some places in Moscow and the Moscow region, Tatyana Pozdnyakova added. For example, at the Baltschug weather station in the capital, the mark reached 85 cm, and at the Cherusti station in the Moscow region — 87 cm. But records are recorded only according to the data of the weather station at VDNH.

The record for a certain date in February was broken, and not the absolute record for the height of snow cover for the season, said Alexander Shuvalov, head of the Meteo forecasting center. According to him, so far in Moscow, only the snow cover height of 73 cm has been officially announced.

Starting from February 26, the snow cover will begin to subside, he noted. And by the weekend, when it comes to the thaw, its height will decrease quite quickly, but the snowdrifts will remain for some time.

At +2 degrees, the snow cover will sink for quite a long time. Most likely, given the amount of snow, it will completely disappear only closer to the second half of April," Alexander Shuvalov added.

Approximately the same period — the end of the first decade of April — was designated by Tatyana Pozdnyakova for the snow cover.

Snow may still fall in the capital region in early March, but its amount will already be insignificant — up to 2 mm of precipitation is expected, the meteorologist noted.

And the highest snowdrifts in the European part of Russia this year are not in Moscow, but to the southeast of the capital, Alexander Shuvalov noted.

— These are Mordovia, Nizhny Novgorod and Ryazan regions. In some places, in Saransk, for example, the snow cover reached 130 cm. In some areas of the Ryazan region, this figure is about a meter," he said. — The most significant snow accumulation occurred in the southeastern half of the European territory of our country. These numbers are not ordinary.

Abnormal frosts in Siberia

In the coming days, several Arctic anticyclones with low temperatures will invade Siberia, and the deviation from the climatic norm there will be 20 degrees, Alexander Shuvalov noted.

This is a negative anomaly. Nighttime temperatures will drop to -40 degrees," the meteorologist said. — Novosibirsk, Omsk, Krasnoyarsk, Bratsk, and the whole of Siberia will be in very cold air in the Arctic air mass for the next three to four days. This is exactly the opposite of what we will observe on the European territory of Russia.

At the same time, two weeks ago there was warming in Siberian cities, up to a thaw, the meteorologist noted. According to him, a weather anomaly is also currently observed in Yakutsk. A cyclone followed an unusual trajectory there, as a result of which the frosts weakened to -3...-8 degrees, which is unusually warm for the region. However, in the near future, the cold weather will begin to gain momentum again.

According to the Hydrometeorological Center, heavy snow, blizzard and wind up to 16 m/s are expected in the Arkhangelsk and Vologda regions on February 27. Heavy precipitation is forecast in Ingushetia on the same day. And on February 25-27, there will be an abnormal frost in the Omsk region, in the south of the Tomsk Region and in the Altai Territory: at night, the thermometer there will drop to -42 degrees.

According to Marina Makarova, a leading employee of the Hydrometeorological Center of Russia, frosts will persist in the south of Western Siberia, especially in places with high population density, in the Yamalo-Nenets and Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrugs for at least the next five days.

A cyclone is moving from the territory of northeastern China to the south of the Far East, the meteorologist said. It will take place with winds, snowfalls and blizzards in the north of Primorsky Krai and in the south of Khabarovsk Krai on February 25 and 26.

Heavy precipitation is expected over the weekend. They will start on Sakhalin on Friday. This cyclone will also affect the Kuril Islands with strong winds and heavy precipitation in the form of snow and sleet," Marina Makarova told Izvestia.

Windy weather and precipitation — rain and sleet — will also be in the south of the European part of Russia.: The Krasnodar and Stavropol Territories, the republics of the North Caucasus, and Kalmykia, the expert added.

When will spring come to Russia

In the south of the European part of Russia, in fact, spring has already begun, flowering has begun there, said Marina Makarova.

— The front of spring is moving from the southwest, where it already exists, to the northeast — the Magadan region, Chukotka. Spring comes to the northeast of Yakutia in the middle of May," the forecaster clarified.

According to the meteorologist, it usually takes two and a half months for spring to set in across Russia. The weather in the Moscow region is already approaching normal, Marina Makarova noted. On weekends, it will exceed the norm by four degrees.

— The change of seasons will occur on a positive temperature background, an abnormal one, — the forecaster assured.

Residents of Moscow and the Moscow region will start the calendar spring with a thaw, Alexander Shuvalov agreed.

"It will be 0 degrees on February 28, and +2 degrees on March 1," he said.

In the second half of the week, there will be negative temperatures at night in the capital region, and around 0 or slightly positive values during the day, Tatyana Pozdnyakova added.
