Panic attacks have become a common occurrence, rather than a rare psychological condition, due to three main factors. Psychotherapist Anton Mokeev told about them on December 8.

"Modern man finds himself in a unique situation where his body has preserved ancient survival mechanisms, and the environment has become as safe as possible," he said in an interview with the newspaper.Ru».

According to Mokeev, there are three main reasons for the high prevalence of panic attacks in recent years.

The first factor is the paradox of comfort, the therapist notes. We live in an era when comfort has become the norm. However, this has created a generation of people who cannot tolerate even minimal discomfort, and their bodies become hypersensitive. Simple physical activity, such as climbing stairs, causes strong bodily reactions, such as palpitations, which are interpreted as life-threatening.

Mokeev spoke about the second factor, an ancient survival mechanism that is activated in modern conditions when there is no threat to life. A panic attack is a reaction necessary for survival in conditions of real danger, but today, without threat, this mechanism is triggered "idly" during normal bodily reactions. The brain, which is not trained to distinguish a real threat from an imaginary one, triggers a survival reaction where it is not needed at all.

The third factor is information intoxication, the expert says. Modern technology provides access to a huge amount of information, which contributes to anxiety. Light dizziness or rapid heartbeat are often interpreted as signs of serious illness, rather than as normal bodily reactions. On the Internet, people share frightening interpretations of symptoms, which only increases anxiety.

The therapist emphasized that solving the problem requires a systematic approach. This includes knowledge of the basics of anatomy and physiology, regular physical activity and information hygiene — a conscious restriction of "self-diagnosis" via the Internet.

On December 3, Anastasia Cardiakos, a family psychologist and psychotherapist, told us how to regain control of attention and stop living in notification mode. She explained that the main principle of digital hygiene is to control your notifications on your devices.
