In early January, believers celebrate one of the most important church holidays — Christmas. A special role in it is played by folk beliefs that came from ancient times and are still considered harbingers of good luck, health and well-being. Increased attention is paid to how to prepare for Christmas, what to avoid and what signs promise a good harvest, favorable changes or family happiness. Izvestia tells us more about the most interesting signs of Christmas.

the nativity of Christ: the meaning of the holiday

Christmas is the greatest event in Christianity, marking the birth of the Lord Jesus Christ, the Savior of the world, in the form of a baby from the Most Pure Virgin Mary. This holiday is not just a memory of a historical fact, but a spiritual revelation that God came to man in humility to give freedom and hope to the human soul. The incarnation of the Son of God symbolizes the beginning of salvation, spiritual and physical renewal of mankind. Christmas teaches us to accept love, goodness and light, rejecting pride and evil, and is a call to inner transformation and faith in eternal life.

Signs related to the weather and harvest

For centuries, popular beliefs have linked the weather on Christmas Eve and on Christmas Day itself with future changes in nature and crops. If the sky is clear and full of stars on the night before Christmas, this is considered a sign of God's blessing, foreshadowing a rich harvest for bread and cereals. The frosty and snowy Christmas night promised a warm, hot summer, which was an important prediction for the peasants who expected a timely harvest. On the contrary, the thaw on this day was interpreted as a harbinger of a cold and prolonged spring, which forced them to prepare for difficulties in sowing and flowering.

Also, the snow that fell on Christmas Day symbolized not only cleanliness, but was also a harbinger of a successful year for gardeners and beekeepers: fluffy snowdrifts protect the earth from frost and nourish the soil with moisture in spring. Clear and frosty weather on the holiday was associated with prosperity and a plentiful harvest. These folk signs helped peasants plan their work in vegetable gardens and fields, listen to nature and prepare for the coming months.

Signs for health and well-being

Signs aimed at preserving health and family well-being were of particular importance. On Christmas night, parents traditionally took their children across the threshold of the house three times — this protected the kids from diseases and evil spirits, helping to maintain their health throughout the year. Garlic cloves were often placed on the festive table in the corners of the tablecloth — such protection from diseases served as a talisman for the whole family.

It was believed that the behavior and location of pets also portends the health of the household. If a pet cat sits under the table during the Christmas meal, this is considered a good sign promising good health and a happy year for everyone present. In many regions, it was also believed that observing peace and quiet in the house on Christmas night helps to preserve peace and harmony in the family.

Signs of love and family happiness

Christmas omens also played an important role in matters of romance and family happiness. Unmarried girls were traditionally not recommended to sweep the floor or take out the trash on Christmas Eve — it was believed that this could scare off suitors and upset fate. There was a belief that the first piece of kutia eaten by a young unmarried girl or a bachelor, when symbolically pronouncing female or male names, would indicate the future name of the chosen one.

What to avoid at Christmas

Christmas days are filled not only with omens, but also with strict restrictions. On Christmas Day, it was forbidden to do heavy and dirty work: cleaning, washing, and taking out the trash, so as not to attract misfortune and illness into the house. Abstaining from arguments, swearing and scandals was considered obligatory — peace and love in the family were of particular value during this period.

Superstition forbade cooking jelly or eating from empty plates, as this could attract trouble, and premature departure from the festive table threatened to let evil spirits into the house. It was also believed that one should not leave the house tablecloth unmade and neglect the preparation of the house for Christmas, because every detail was of sacred importance for the well-being of the family.
