The appearance of the old New Year is due to the divergence of two calendars — the Julian calendar, which operated in Russia until 1918, and the Gregorian calendar, which is accepted in most countries of the world and is used today. This difference of 13 days explains the date shift. Historically in Russia, this day was celebrated as St. Basil's Evening, named after St. Basil the Great. The eve of the holiday, January 13, was called the Generous Evening, or Malanka. Traditionally, it was customary to set the table richly in order to live in abundance and prosperity all year round. A special place among the treats was occupied by a generous kutya porridge made from whole grains of wheat or barley with honey, nuts and dried fruits.
Another common custom was caroling: young people and children went around the houses singing ritual songs, wishing the owners health and prosperity, for which they received treats and small money. In modern Russia, the old New Year has lost its religious and ceremonial significance, becoming an informal but beloved holiday.
