The so-called thunderstorm asthma can be life-threatening, particularly for people suffering from asthma and allergic rhinitis. This is reported by China Central Television (CCTV).

With the onset of autumn and an increase in allergen levels in the northern regions of China, the number of cases of allergic reactions is increasing. Frequent thunderstorms have caused coughing, wheezing, and other symptoms, and can also be life-threatening in severe cases. They are especially dangerous for people suffering from asthma and allergic rhinitis. According to the publication, thunderstorms can trigger a dangerous disease known as an "asthma storm."

Professor Tang Hai, chief physician of the Department of Respiratory Medicine and Intensive Care at the Ningxia Multidisciplinary Hospital, explained that during a thunderstorm, strong winds raise pollen, mold and other allergens into the air. As a result, microscopic particles break down into smaller ones and easily enter the respiratory tract. Subsequently, allergens settle on the ground, which leads to an increase in their concentration in the air. Once in the respiratory tract, the particles disrupt the permeability of the mucous membrane and can cause acute asthma.

"Currently, the high—risk group for thunderstorm asthma includes primarily patients with chronic asthma, hay fever or allergic rhinitis, as well as children, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems," the specialist said.

Although the symptoms of thunderstorm asthma are similar to regular asthma, they are more dangerous and can last much longer. Professor Tang Hai noted that some patients may continue to experience symptoms even for three to five years after the episode.

Doctors recommend that people who are susceptible to this disease take anti-allergic medications in advance before and after a thunderstorm, and always carry emergency medications for asthma. In case of an asthma attack, it is recommended to stay in a semi-sitting position, keep the airways open, consume plenty of fluids, and use medications such as budesonide, formoterol, and salbutamol every 20 minutes. If symptoms persist after three applications, it is necessary to consult a specialist.

It is also recommended to take precautions before and after a thunderstorm. In particular, keep doors and windows closed, avoid leaving the house, and if necessary, wear masks and safety glasses. After going outside, it is important to thoroughly rinse your face and nose to reduce the risk of an allergic reaction.

Earlier, on August 30, the Russian Medical Journal reported that allergic rhinitis remains one of the most common respiratory diseases. For effectiveness, experts recommend using combinations of intranasal glucocorticosteroids and antihistamines. According to the publication, combination therapy can be used as a starting treatment for moderate to severe treatment.
