Caste failure: why Trump left the G7 summit ahead of schedule
The G7 summit has been taking place in Canada since Sunday, June 15. US President Donald Trump, who was supposed to hold talks with world leaders, unexpectedly left the meeting ahead of schedule, making a number of loud statements along the way. Details can be found in the Izvestia article.
G7 Summit: Why Trump left earlier
From June 15 to 17, Canada hosts the G7 summit (which includes seven economically developed countries: Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States). In addition to the participating countries, the meeting was attended by the invited leaders of Australia, Ukraine (Vladimir Zelensky's powers expired on May 20, 2024), South Africa and India. Recently, Ukraine, as well as sanctions against Russia, have been on the regular agenda at G7 summits.
This time, the G7 meeting is taking place against the backdrop of a large-scale exchange of missile strikes between Israel and Iran. According to initial reports, it was precisely because of the situation in the Middle East that Donald Trump decided to return to Washington ahead of time. This was stated by White House Press Secretary Caroline Levitt. Emmanuel Macron also said that the reason for Trump's departure is his work on a cease-fire in the Middle East.
However, Donald Trump himself soon declared that this was not the case. He wrote about this on the Truth Social network: "President Emmanuel Macron, seeking publicity, mistakenly stated that I had left the Group of Seven summit in Canada to return to Washington to work on a cease-fire between Israel and Iran. Wrong! He has no idea why I'm going to Washington, but it has nothing to do with the cease-fire. It's much more than that. Intentionally or not, Emmanuel is constantly getting things wrong. Stay tuned!".
This was not the first time that Trump had abruptly left such an event. The last time Canada hosted the G7 in 2018, Trump refused to sign a joint communique after a conflict with then-Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and left earlier to prepare for a meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
Israel-Iran Conflict: U.S. involvement
The conflict in the Middle East is still ongoing, and it was also supposed to be discussed on the sidelines of the G7 summit. It was reported that Trump instructed his team to meet with Iranian officials as soon as possible to determine whether Tehran is serious about a diplomatic solution to the conflict with Israel. The US president also invited Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Vice President Jay Dee Vance to meet with the Iranian side.
Against the background of the escalating conflict between Iran and Israel, American political commentator and journalist Tucker Carlson, in an interview with Trump's former strategic adviser Steve Bannon, said that the possible involvement of the United States in an armed conflict with Iran is fraught with the decline of the "American Empire."
Donald Trump responded rudely to this statement: "Someone, please explain to crazy Tucker Carlson that Iran cannot have nuclear weapons."
On Friday, June 13, Israel launched Operation Rising Lion against Iran's nuclear program. As a result of the strikes, members of Iran's supreme military command and some nuclear physicists were killed. Iran responded by firing hundreds of ballistic missiles at Israel.
What was discussed at the G7 summit, how did it end
The G7 summit, according to Western media, ended in unprecedented failure. Despite the fact that the Europeans had high hopes for him, trying to impose their agenda on Donald Trump, they failed. The only result of the American president's arrival was the signing of a declaration with Great Britain.
According to Bloomberg, the allies are increasingly questioning Trump's reliability, trying to avoid confrontation with him, although at the same time they are strengthening ties with each other, especially in the areas of security and trade. All this is happening against the background of declining support for Ukraine from the United States.
On the sidelines of the summit, Donald Trump was supposed to meet with Vladimir Zelensky, but the meeting did not take place due to the early departure of the US president. In Kiev, they hoped that they would be able to convince Trump to allocate another aid package to Ukraine.
In addition, Donald Trump expressed his opinion that Russia's exclusion from the G7 was a mistake and he would like to return Moscow to this international club (Russia was excluded from the G8 in 2014 against the background of Crimea's entry into the Russian Federation. Thus, the club turned into the existing "Big Seven").
Donald Trump himself has repeatedly said that Russia's exclusion from the club was a mistake and the restoration of the G8 format with its participation is in the interests of all participants. In addition, on the sidelines of the summit, he said that he did not want to tighten sanctions against Russia, due to the fact that "it costs the United States a lot of money" and we are talking "about millions and billions."
The summit has not yet been completed, but it is already known in advance that the publication of the final communique is not even planned.
Maria Zakharova, the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, spoke about the results of the G7 in Canada in her Telegram channel: "The main result of the G7 meeting was the statement of the multibillion-dollar damage caused by anti—Russian sanctions - a crossbow was recorded."
The deputy chairman of the Federation Council, Konstantin Kosachev, suggested that the "Seven" is shrinking, turning into a "six".
"It seems that a few years after Russia, the United States is leaving the Group of Seven. In any case, Trump's departure without references to the Middle East and with a disavowal of [French President Emmanuel] statements. — Ed. According to Macron ("Emmanuel is always wrong"), there is practically no good future for this format. <...> With maniacal persistence worthy of much better use, the "seven" is shrinking both geographically and politically, turning into either the "six" or the "elusive Joe", who, as in that joke is just not needed by anyone," he wrote in his Telegram channel.
