Earthquake in Japan caused a shift of the earth's crust up to 9 cm
A powerful earthquake off the coast of Aomori Prefecture in northern Japan led to a horizontal displacement of the earth's crust by about 9 cm near the epicenter. This was announced on December 9 by the country's Geospatial Information Administration.
"At the Higashi-dori 2 electronic geodetic point, located near the epicenter zone, an offset of about 9 cm in an easterly direction was recorded," the official website of the department says.
The Office notes that the results of the preliminary analysis can be clarified after additional verification of the data.
The day before, an earthquake of magnitude 7.2 occurred in northern Japan. Tremors were recorded off the eastern coast of Amori Prefecture. The depth of the earthquake is about 50 km. Subsequently, a tsunami with a height of 40 cm was recorded in the northeast of Japan. In addition, near the city of Kuji in Iwate Prefecture, tsunami waves reached 50 cm in height.
Later it became known that as a result of a strong earthquake off the Pacific coast of Japan, seven people were injured. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi instructed the Government to cooperate with regional authorities to rescue the victims and provide timely information about the tsunami and evacuation. Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara noted that about 800 households were left without electricity.
