- Peru severed diplomatic relations with Mexico over asylum for former Prime Minister Chavez
The head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Peru, Hugo de Sela, announced the severance of diplomatic relations with Mexico due to the fact that this state granted asylum to former Prime Minister Betsy Chavez, accused of rebellion. His words are quoted on November 3 by the Peruvian newspaper La República (LR).
According to the newspaper, Chavez is currently staying at the Mexican embassy in Lima. The text emphasizes that this fact indicates Mexico City's attempts to "turn the perpetrators" of the coup attempt into victims.
"In the face of this act and given the repeated interference of the previous president in the internal affairs of Peru, the Peruvian government has decided to sever diplomatic relations with Mexico," Hugo de Sela said.
The Minister noted that despite the severance of diplomatic relations between the countries, consular relations remain, which means protection for citizens of both countries.
On October 21, Izvestia published footage of protests in Peru, which were attended by representatives of the younger generation. In this regard, the press service of the Russian Embassy the next day called on Russians visiting the republic to remain vigilant.
All important news is on the Izvestia channel in the MAX messenger.
