US President Donald Trump, while on a visit to Japan on October 28, called the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in the middle of the last century a "small conflict."

"It's funny that we had a little conflict with Japan. You may have heard about it," RIA Novosti quoted Trump as saying.

However, despite the mention of a "small conflict," the American leader focused on the current close allied relations between Washington and Tokyo, noting that both countries "remain the closest friends and partners."

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on August 6 that the United States had not repented of the atomic bombing of Japanese cities and was becoming more convinced that it was the right step. The diplomat noted that Japanese representatives on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima did not mention that it was committed by the United States. Zakharova added that in his statement, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres also did not say that the nuclear strikes were carried out by Washington.
