Doctors in Moscow performed a unique operation for severe spinal deformity
In Moscow, doctors at St. Vladimir's Children's City Clinical Hospital, together with specialists from the Priorov CITO, performed a unique operation on a teenager with severe kyphosis. This was announced on Monday, October 6, by Anastasia Rakova, Deputy Mayor of the capital for Social Development.
She said that a 17-year—old patient was admitted to the hospital with a curvature of the spine at an angle of 80 degrees - this is a severe disabling stage of the disease. The young man suffered from constant back pain, rapid fatigue and risks of complications from internal organs, writes "Moscow 24".
Rakova noted that previously such cases were treated with the installation of a titanium rod, which fixed the spine, but completely limited the mobility of the thoracic region. Now, doctors have applied an innovative method to correct the deformity without loss of mobility. The deputy mayor called this approach a real breakthrough in pediatric medicine, according to the Moscow City News agency.
The operation lasted several hours. Surgeons installed 21 screw fasteners and passed flexible polymer cords through them, which made it possible to fully straighten the spine and maintain movement.
After successful intervention, the teenager was discharged home for rehabilitation, the website writes kp.ru .
