Lviv pointed to the gradual Russification of the city
The process of Russification is gradually taking place in the Ukrainian city of Lviv. This was announced on September 16 by Lyubomir Melnichuk, a deputy of the Lviv City Council, during a meeting.
"Lviv is slowly becoming Russified. The city that we called the most Ukrainian—speaking city, it seems to me, is gradually losing this status," he drew attention.
According to the official, there are currently no programs in the city to protect the Ukrainian language. Melnichuk also expressed the opinion that the current situation is a "catastrophically big problem."
On September 15, the Language Ombudsman of Ukraine, Elena Ivanovskaya, acknowledged that Kiev remains a Russian-speaking city. In an interview with Glavkom, she commented on the journalist's words that the capital was Russified, calling it "a serious problem, including a philosophical one."
Earlier, on July 25, the Department of National Minorities under the Government of Lithuania issued a reminder on the right to freely communicate in Russian in the country. According to the director of the department, Dainius Babilas, the Russian-speaking community of Lithuania includes both citizens of the country of Russian nationality (including representatives of the Old Believer community) and temporary foreigners, including short-term tourists.
