Alexey Panov, Associate Professor of the Department of Biotechnology and Industrial Pharmacy at RTU MIREA, Candidate of Chemical Sciences, gave advice on storing and using honey on Wednesday, September 3.

The expert said that it contains B vitamins, organic acids, potassium, magnesium, iron and other trace elements, as well as natural antioxidants. According to him, the maximum benefit of honey is manifested with moderate consumption — no more than 1-2 teaspoons per day for an adult. At the same time, honey is most effective when taken on an empty stomach, dissolved in warm water. The product is contraindicated in case of allergy to bee products and requires caution in case of diabetes.

"Add honey to hot tea or milk only after the drink has cooled to a temperature below 40 degrees. Otherwise, it turns into a regular sweetener, losing its enzymatic activity," Panov said in an interview with Lenta.Ru .

The expert called for storing honey in airtight glass or ceramic containers, away from sunlight and heat sources. He called the optimal temperature +10... +20 degrees. The biochemist clarified that at lower temperatures, crystallization accelerates, and at high temperatures, useful properties are lost.

Metal storage dishes should not be used, as honey components react with metals, and this can lead to the formation of harmful compounds.

He also did not recommend storing the product in the refrigerator. Panov called a dark shelf or a closed cabinet an ideal place, where a stable room temperature is maintained.

On August 18, a gastroenterologist of the first category, nutritionist, and eating psychologist Nuria Dianova stated that tea with honey was not beneficial. According to her, honey is a high—calorie and expensive product, essentially comparable to sugar, so you should not look for special benefits in it.

Earlier, on August 14, nutritionist Mariyat Mukhina stated in an interview with NSN that honey is better combined, as indicated in ancient recipes, with nuts or fats.
