Germany criticized EU plans on security guarantees for Ukraine
The European Union (EU) countries do not have the authority to send a military contingent to Ukraine in the event of an end to the conflict on the territory of the country as security guarantees. This was announced on September 1 by German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius.
This is how he commented on the statement by the head of the European Commission (EC) Ursula von der Leyen about a "clear plan" for a military presence in Ukraine, which is being developed by the EU.
"The European Union has no authority or competence regarding the deployment of troops from the member states of the community, regardless of who or what they are intended for, I would refrain from confirming or commenting on such initiatives," Der Spiegel newspaper quoted him as saying.
According to Pistorius, such initiatives by countries are not discussed until the parties sit down at the negotiating table. He stressed that currently it is "fundamentally wrong to talk publicly about such decisions."
On August 31, Von der Leyen announced that European countries were developing a specific plan for a possible military presence in Ukraine after the end of the conflict, which would be fully supported by the capabilities of the United States.
