A court sentenced an American mercenary to 28 years in prison in absentia.
The court sentenced American mercenary David Ryan O'Leary (listed as a terrorist and extremist) to 28 years in prison in absentia with a fine of 1.6 million rubles. The relevant information was published on the official website of the Prosecutor General's Office of the Russian Federation on August 20.
"It has been established that from August 2024 to April 2025, O'Leary, along with other persons, illegally crossed the state border of the Russian Federation, entered the territory of the Kursk region, moving an upgraded Kalashnikov assault rifle and ammunition across the customs border," the ministry said in a statement.
It is noted that O'Leary participated in the Ukrainian conflict on the side of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU). According to the Prosecutor General's Office, during the specified period, the convict received remuneration in the amount of over 3.1 million rubles.
"Taking into account the position of the public prosecutor, the court sentenced O'Leary in absentia to 28 years in prison, serving the first eight years in prison, and the remainder of the sentence in a high—security penal colony, with a fine of 1.6 million rubles," the department said.
It is reported that the mercenary was found guilty under five articles of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation, including illegal arms trafficking and a terrorist act.
On July 29, the Supreme Court of the Donetsk People's Republic (DPR) sentenced 37-year-old US citizen Andrew Richard Brent, who participated in military operations on the side of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, to 14 years in prison in absentia. According to investigators, in 2023, Brent arrived in Ukraine through Poland, where he voluntarily joined the 4th Battalion of the International Legion of Territorial Defense of Ukraine as a mercenary.
