Engine oil, which is sold for bottling from a barrel, is not inferior in quality to oil from a canister. Nevertheless, buyers of such oil risk facing a lack of guarantees of product authenticity and compliance with storage standards in non-certified services, Roman Sokuev, head of the Sintec Lubricants Technical expertise center, said on August 20.

"Without a traceability system (such as historical API certification or the upcoming "Fair Mark"), it is almost impossible to verify the origin of the oil. Unscrupulous service stations often dilute the composition, top up the waste, or store barrels haphazardly: under the sun or in the cold, which can provoke oil stratification, additive degradation, and condensation, leading to precipitation and inclusions," Rossiyskaya Gazeta quotes the expert.

At the same time, the expert called the main danger of buying such oil its discrepancy with the declared viscosity (especially the high-temperature parameter HTHS), which can cause, for example, oil starvation in turbines. Excess zinc or molybdenum content can cause failure of catalysts and particulate filters.

Sokuev advised consumers to demand "Fair Mark" codes from sellers if the oil has already been marked, as well as to visually evaluate the oil, choose a service station with transparent logistics and pay attention to the price (a suspiciously low price is an alarming signal).

The auto expert explained on July 23 that the rapid darkening of the engine oil (1-2 thousand km after replacement) is a normal process that demonstrates that the lubricant performs its cleaning function.
