The media and experts from Western countries made optimistic forecasts for Russia before the start of talks between Russian leader Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump in Alaska. This was announced on August 15 by a correspondent of Izvestia, who is in Anchorage.

"If [former US President Joe] Biden's team completely denied the possibility of dialogue, then the new American administration has been trying to establish contact from the very first days: a series of phone calls, visits by special envoys, negotiations at the delegation level. And here is the climax. The meeting is at the highest level!" — said correspondent Maxim Prikhod.

It is noted that the American media call the meeting in Alaska a great victory for the Russian president. The biggest reason for the unrest of the West and Ukraine is the issue of Kiev's territorial concessions, which are characterized as inevitable.

"If the Russians take Kramatorsk, in fact, the whole Donbass will be in their hands. They've managed to get quite far," said Michael Clarke, a professor at the Faculty of Military Studies at King's College London.

Former German Ambassador to Russia Rudiger von Fritsch stressed that there is no certainty in the West whether Trump is really worried about the future and security of Ukraine and Europe. At the talks, as noted, the leaders of the two countries may discuss the restoration of cooperation and trade between Moscow and Washington.

"The United States is gradually lifting sanctions, no longer imposing them on new companies. Perhaps this is a signal of Russia's interest in economic cooperation. Trump himself said that he could do business with Russia again even without resolving this conflict," added Thomas Yeager, a professor at the University of Cologne and a political scientist.

Putin and Trump will meet at the Elmendorf-Richardson Air Force Base in Anchorage on August 15 at 22:00 Moscow time. The central topic of the meeting of the presidents will be the discussion of the conflict in Ukraine. On August 14, Trump noted the importance of the upcoming meeting with the Russian side, and also expressed hope that the negotiations would go well.

Kirill Dmitriev, the Russian president's special Representative for cooperation with Foreign countries, said on the eve of the Russian-American talks that maintaining dialogue with the United States was important, but it was also important that Russia's position be heard. In addition, he noted that such interaction with the American side was impossible during the Biden administration.
