Doctors in the Kolar region of Karnataka state in southern India accidentally discovered a previously unknown blood type antigen in a patient. This was reported on July 30 by The New Indian Express.

"This remarkable case became known when a 38-year—old woman was admitted to a hospital in Kolara for cardiac surgery," the article said.

It was believed that she had the first blood type with a positive Rh factor (O Rh+), which, as noted in the publication, is the most common blood type. But it turned out that none of the samples of such blood was suitable for the patient.

As a result, the doctors turned to international laboratories — the Bristol Blood Group Reference Laboratory and the Bangalore Blood Center. Ten months of molecular studies allowed the identification of a previously unknown antigen, which was registered under the name CRIB.
