- Filat accused Sandu of seizing Moldova's judicial system under the guise of EU integration.
President Maia Sandu and her ruling Action and Solidarity Party have taken over Moldova's judicial system, justifying it as a necessity in the framework of the European integration process. This was announced on July 12 by the former Prime Minister of the country, the leader of the Liberal Democratic Party of Moldova, Vladimir Filat.
Earlier, the country's Lawyers' Union announced a general strike in protest against amendments to the law on the legal profession adopted by the Moldovan parliament.
"The strike announced by the lawyers is a reaction to the final chord of the Sandu regime in an attempt to seize control of the judicial system and justice in general. Her Government also wants to manage the legal profession, abolish its autonomy and subordinate it to the Ministry of Justice. This is the final stage of a plan that they started a long time ago," Filat said on Moldovan television.
He also urged lawyers not to repeat the mistakes of judges and prosecutors who became dependent on Sandu and her party because they could not unite and defend their rights.
"They (the Moldovan authorities. They talk about integration into the European Union, but what they are doing is exactly the opposite of European values. They hang the European flag on their abuses in order to deceive people," the former Prime Minister of the country summed up.
On July 9, the head of Gagauzia, Evgenia Gutsul, accused the judge in the case of her arrest of bias. According to Gutsul, the judges follow the instructions of Moldovan President Maia Sandu, who "curtails all democratic freedoms" and eliminates inconvenient, in her opinion, politicians.
